For the price and hassle of the DIY, he can get you a complete rebuilt for about $50 more - around $210. He will even give you a warranty on it. He’s very thorough on his work, replaces all backlighting and treats all buttons and connections.
My new unit looks beautiful!
Hard to beat.
I figured by the time and money I spent on tools and supplies and then the risk of screwing up a brand new display, it be better just to let him do it.
Good guy, fast service.

Painless and quick FIX
Have you ever had a person tell you a story about a "friend" who did a dumb thing when actually they were talking about themselves?
Well, I have a "friend" who bought a display repair KIT and jacked up his whole heater control unit. Then the friend found a guy named jay who saved his rear-end and climate control.
jjeichmann@yahoo.com had pity on me - ah ... I mean my friend - and took a pile of what should have been worthless junk and made the climate control look and function like new.
Yes, the kit should not have been that hard to install by looking at the directions, but there were so many things that went wrong, from overheating and lifting the LCD pads to breaking the plastic lens.
Hindsight is 20/20 and I wish I had a friend recommend to me to let someone else do it. So, for what it is worth - If you are having this problem get a hold of the guy who saved my "friend" let him take care of you. He will give you a great price and warranty.
I highly recommend him.
Here is his email address. jjeichmann@yahoo.com Tell him Big Al sent you!

just to update, i went through jjeichmann@yahoo.com:
the process was easy. he's very good about answering/responding to e-mails, and keeps you up to date on when a suitable unit will be available. you also receive installation instructions as well.
i highly recommend his service. you won't be disappointed.
