I understand that...

I just don't understand how there cannot be a definitive answer in the open vs. LSD mystery.

I think the definitive answer is noted above "but the LS400 never came with an LSD - this is quoted straight from Lexus corporate."

One factor not mentioned yet is weight distribution... If you turn off trac and punch it on level ground (or do a brake torque) while facing straight ahead you will most likely get 2 patches. That is b/c the weight to both tires is nearly identical. As the article linked above states " Remember that the open differential always applies the same torque to both wheels"... that's why your open diff can seem like LSD.

However, try turning off trac when it's wet while turning... as you start to move the weight distribution is greater on the outer wheel giving the inner wheel a chance to spin wildly. You will not see that happen with an LSD. (this happened to me this AM but try it if you like)

The fact that good suspenstion, load leveling, and /or other electronic suspention stuff may be in place on your car will keep the weight distribution pretty equal.... that's why you may think you have an LSD..... but you don't

simple answer is NO.

the LS400 does not and never came with any sort of LSD from the factory.

I've been stuck so many times in my 93 LS, on the ice... only one wheel spinning.

What's the deal ?
Simply the distribution of the grip isn't relatively even..
