Tilt/telescopic problem

Tilt/telescopic problem
I have a 95 LS 400 and the tilt / telescope works, but most of the time I have to push the lever repeatedly to get it to the position I want. When I turn off the car, most of the time, the steering wheel doens't move, or it moves very little. I believe it's supposed to tilt up and in when you take out the key. Even when using memory seat button, it usually moves very little. Ironically, I have the same problem in my 2000 GMC Sierra, but with the power seats, not tilt. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

had a similar situation on my 94LS except my problem was that it stopped moving up and down. I took it to the Lexus dealer in Kendall (Miami) and they actually fixed it for free!!. They explained it was the gear under the steering colum. the gear is round and only uses half of the teeth the rotate and move the steering wheel, so they just turned it around to use the new teeth on the other side. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem on my LS. Out of the blue one day when I took the keys out of the ign. the steering wheel didnt move up. So I took off the plastic cover around the steering collum and after removing (2) 10mm which bolts on the tilt motor, I saw a 2 inch plastic gear and noticed the teeth on the gear were worm down. SO I continued to the Lexus dealership and pick'd up a new one put it in, and it tilts w/ no problem..

Thanks for the input. When mine moves, the motion seems to be trouble free, in other words, I don't hear any funny noises. I did notice the two screws and I'm going to take off that cover and see if I can find anything.. THANKS
