Please help, I have noticed that there is white smoke comming from my exhaust. This only happens when I first start the car in the morning and 8 hrs later when I am leaving work. The smoke last anyway from 10 seconds to a 1 minute. Anyone have any ideas what this could be and how to fix it.

Thanks

Sounds like worn valve guides (seals). My guess is you've got a pretty high-mileage engine or one that hasn't been taken very good care of - oil changes were not paid attention to.

Expensive fix - valve job.

Inexpensive fix - not sure what's best these days. Maybe an oil additive like Restore (I think it's called that or STP) for worn valve seals. Best I can suggest is to go to NAPA or one of the other parts stores and describe the problem to the guy at the counter.

Thanks for the quick response. I will try the cheap fix first. Yes my LS has over 227,000 miles on it. I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks

I agree , its valve guides. I purchased an 85 Supra 7 years ago with 85Kmiles. It had smoke during start up also. I have been using Restore since and 20-50wt Castrol oil, and now have 268K on it. Does it burn oil ? Yes. I finally didnt pass smog last year, I purchased a new catalytic converter and it passed.
Good luck.
and keep an eye on the oil level between changes. I think 20-50wt may be too high a viscosity for the lexus engine.

I get a smoke discharge from my exhaust too. Mine happens when I'm accelerating heavily at high speed though (flooring it from 70 to 90). I'm not sure exactly what it is, but the car seems fine. I kinda wonder if your smoke might be related to the power steering post. One of the mechanics said that there is a valve on the power steering pump that can cause oil to leak from the power steering and cause smoke in the exhaust.

Smoke on acceleration is most often attributed to worn rings or something else in the cylinders. As you accelerate the additional engine vacuum draws oil past the rings into the combustion chamber.

Cheap fix - Oil additive such as restore

Expensive fix - engine rebuild
