Cool Issues with 18 or 20 inch rims

I just got a 1998 LS400 and I want to get some new rims for them. Many of the wheel dealers mentioned problems that would arise when putting 20s on this car involving the calipers. So I had a couple questions:

1. What are the exact issues that arise with 20s?

2. What is the biggest size that could be put on there without any issues arising? Are 18s ok?

Thanks ppl...'preciate it!

90% of "regular" wheels wil need spaers on the car regardless of the size. the reason for this is that hte 95-00 LS400s had much larger brakes than most cars and most wheels wont fit over them. search the LS400 and the Wheel and Tire forum for more info.

hes asking about brake clearance, a problem that you wouldnt have in your LS because of the much smaller brakes.

Welcome to CL.
As Pure mentioned, you'll need to find a wheel with proper high disk clearance. Plenty of quality wheels that will fit without spacers.

On 2nd gen. LS400 the break calipers are larger, they stick out more above the rotor surface, that is why you need wheels with larger offset so that the wheel sits on studs and doesn`t touch the caliper.

Offset does not gurantee caliper clearance, you want a wheel designed to clear a large caliper and those are with high disk fitments. Keep in mind, if you get an agressive offset and have to use a spacer you may also have fender well rubbing issues

Contact D2 about wheel fitments, this thread also:

If you go outside, have the shop test fit the proposed wheel to the car to verify clearance.
