Default REALLY HOT Transmission?

I looked at a 98 LS400 yesterday that had been driven a long way to see me. I checked the tranny fluid and WOW I melted my fingerprints right off with the transmission dipstick. It didnt blister, but it was freaking HOT!

Is the transmission supposed to get THIS hot? the car's got 134k on it and mechanically the car seems perfect. The fluid was halfway between "red" and "strawberry" and didnt smell burnt at all. Shifting from park or neutral into gear was very smooth & hardly noticeable, i'm worried about the heat though.

thanks

A little trick my uncle and I do is a sprinkle some water over the tranny to see if it boils or burns up...if it does...then DEFINITELY time to change the fluid.

Yes, that fluid can get hot, but compare it with you engine oil heat, as the engine oil should be by far hotter.

this felt above 250 or more. 190F is uncomfortable, but you can touch it without immediately singe-ing your skin.
I could only talk the guy down to 10500 with bird poop thats so bad the hood needs to be repainted along with the trunk, and it needs a new front bumper, so i passed on the car anyway.

thanks guys
