Smile Updating GPS Navigation on '98 LS400

Just picked up a '98 LS400 that came with factory Navigation. Various sites say Navigation first showed up on LS's with '99 only. It is a true '98. In any case, the previous owner never updated the database/software. How do I go about getting the datebase/software upgraded? Do I have to take it back to a dealer? Potentially how much will it cost (just to get some idea)? Is it worth upgrading/updating?

Thx.

Thanks. Is it worth upgrading? I know the roads are always changing and there are new freeways. I guess i will have todrive around for awhile to see how accurate it still is.

Not sure how new the latest maps are. We moved to a brand new development built around Novemeber '04, but my Home is in the middle of a big patch of green.

So Lexus released an 06 update to the Hard Drive GPS system......it's amazing how bad the version I have in my 2000......have the 01 update thanks to the unit going bad had it replaced under warranty and got the free update.......

If it is a new update I hope the roads are better and I can live with few POI's....

Upgrades do not change maps; only points of interest; don't waste your $$

Seems like you got it backwards.

The Lexus HDD-based system update contains many of the same points of interest from the previous versions. Due to memory capacity reasons many less relevant points of interested were removed to make way for more pertinent information such as roads and highways.

i also have a 98 LS and never updated the HDD on my Navi. I was told our cars should get a one-time free HDD Navi upgrade from dealership. Someone on the forum confirmed his LS got a free update so I am also looking to to do that from my dealer.

So far I did not have the time to go to dealer and find out. You might want to check out with your dealer and let us know
It could save you $300
