what can i take from 98-00 to put on a 95-97 v.interior

They are different finishes, it wont match your dash.

i "could" just swap the front trim, right? with 95-97, there is no ASL button (what is ASL?) and can i simply just leave it out where the 95-97 trim has no actual hole for it

You mean the FACE of the headunit? Im not sure if it comes off easily, and not sure it will fit. ASL = Automatic Sound Leveling. Adjusts the volume levels depending on ourside conditions. (higher on highway, lowers at stoplights).

You can give it a try... but I've never seen it done before.
