Question How do I pull the Radio on 98 LS?

Hey guys

So I have the tech manual but it's so brief. Has anyone actually done it that can step me thru it?

I need to pull the radio so I can acess the wiring harness. If my idea works I'll explain what I did.

Thanks all
Jerry

It's the same for the 98-00 LS as for the 95-97 LS: http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremov...sLS400str1.htm

Be gentle when prying out the air vent -- it is quite fragile and can come apart into a LOT of pieces. It can be snapped back together (if you don't break any parts) but doing so can be tedious.

Also, be gentle when prying out the wood console around the shift level -- it is thinner and more fragile than on the early LS400.

I've removed the radio/AC control unit in my 00 LS several times when routing phone cables, brackets and consoles. Last time it took me less than five minutes.

Exactly what they said... took me 2 hours to put them back like they were, and sliding correctly!!!

Ok guys this is all great advice, but.

if you look at the attached picture from my tech manual it mentions a clip that none of you did? Who is correct? I'm just kinda scared about shoving screwdrivers in places where they should not be, if this manual is incorrect?

Did you all NOT need to use a screw driver?

Thanks

Are you talking about the middle picture? that all comes out as one peice (including the wooden portion), and thats what we are reffering too as AC vents.

If I remember correctly, the clip on the back of the air vent assembly is what allows the air vent assembly to snap firmly into place and to be held securely. I don't remember having to specifically deal with the clips when removing the air vent assembly. But I think I had to reposition the clips back into the proper position before reinstalling the air vent assembly. Sorry, it has been about 1 1/2 years since I last did this -- memory is a little hazy.

My weapon of choice is a putty knife with a one inch wide stiff blade -- with the blade wrapped with black electrical tape to prevent scratching. A taped screwdriver works too but I feel that the putty knife spreads the force when removing the wood console panel around the gear shift -- my main worry is that I will crack the wood.

Yes, I plan on wiring for a MP3 player.... I just got a new one and totaly love the sound quality thru the Tape port. I just have to beleive it will be even better thru a direct wired input. So far my only delema is what are the correct wires behind the radio to connect too. i need to do some research here on CL before i pull the radio out.

By the way I got the Sandisck Sansa 2gig player with Rhapsody service. I am totaly blown away by it.

Hmm OK

I remember reading here somewhere about doing a direct wire into the CD changer input to the radio. They tapped in between the CD changer and the radio. Then just play a blank CD and you could here your MP3 player. All it cost was a 1/8" mini plug from Radio Shack. Well I have seached for hours and no luck finding that thread...bummer

Do any of you have a clue what I am talking about?

Jerry

Hey just found this....

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...+changer+input

i believe the amp /cd / radio are more integrated than that...

Pioneer unit - the radio goes direct to the amp and the CD changer goes direct to the amp... the cd changer powers the radio.. the bus is between the amp and the radio...

but here are the wire colors if you want to try...

radio to Amp:

Green = Right (-)
Red = Left (-)
White = Right (+)
Black = Left (+)

CD to AMP:
GREEN = CD LEFT (-)
RED = CD LEFT (+)
White = CD RIGHT (-)
Black = CD RIGHT (+)
