Final update.
Car is up and running beautifully. Problem driver side ignition coil as predicted by just fix it. Great job and thank you much. Also thanks to crazi for your info via internet as well as via this thread. I hope in the future someone who has the misfortune of this happening to them can find this thread.

the coil opens up and shuts off completely and yes it will dump gas..
Have you done the coil yet? it is very common for the 1 above the ac
compressor to fail. I keep a spare in my tool box just for testing...

In my case it turned out not to be the coil. I changed the spark plugs and wires, and the problem still existed. We traced it down to the wire that connects to the crankshaft sensor, it was partially melted and was shorting out... for some reason, after it rains, or when it is snow, or I guess when the weather is moist in generally, the car will exhibit the same signs that the igntion stuff does. once we changed the wire, the car now runs smooth again.

coil problem
I had a similar problem with my 93. Nobody could find it. It would only run crappy in the morning if it started at all. After that, no hint of a problem. My problem was with one igniter module being sensitive to cold. I found it by putting a baggie of ice on the igniters one at a time and letting them chill for ten minutes. when I chilled one and the engine acted up I then put a baggie of warm water on the igniter in question and the problem resolved. Igniter was $40 from Gazi and $480 from Lex. I got to the ignition problem by removing one coil wire and starting the car. The first side ran the car like a limp four cylinder. When I pilled the second coil, it ran really really rough and knew which ignition circuit the problem was in. Without parts I swapped ig coils first and then igniter modules to see the problem switch sides. It did follow the igniter. The ice made the diagnosis certain. Switch the igniters by just reversing the plugs and then pulling the coil wires one at a time and see if you still ave the same symptom. With replacement parts costing what they do, I needed to be certain.
Hope this helps somone. Good information that the coils are a high failure item on the V8 Lex. Thanks for that.
