That is a fair price but a 2000 for less than $16k is a steal.....I love my 95 - will be hard to swap it for a 2000 but I think I can find the way.

Good point - after 97 the front clip changed (we know) and the tail lights changed somewhat - average folks see the "L" on the trunk and the LS logo and it's all the same

Where do you suggest to look? I've seen some, but I'm probably more picky with the condition, mileage, color of interior/exterior...

I dunno...my 99 isn't that sluggish passing cars...I seriously doubt a UCF20 could keep the same pace. It would be close though, essentially the same car.

I got my 91 with 167k for $2500 in Nov 05. Now it's almost 190k. 91, 95, 98, who cares, it's all the same, besides us lexus fans, 99% of people can't tell till the 430.
nov 06 i believe

heh, doubtful, i got everything i wanted in the car right down to color miles and maint. records.

except of course the A/S which was a beyond rare option in the 95+ LS'

i actually found my car through both yahoo autos and autotrader juss got lucky.

but i did see quite a few other UCF21s that were for under 16k, hell i got mine for a price i feel ashamed about talking about LOL

Lets get a few things straight:

-$20K gets you an 01-02 LS430 with navi. a '00 would never pass $16K, no matter what.
-UCF20 can never a UCF21 from any speed, or to any speed, period.
-UCF21 has much better reliability due to the issues including power steering, and ECU, as well as transmission found on the 95's.

The choice is yours, but ask all the 95-97 owners here, and they will tell to wait and get a 98+. It might not seem like a big difference now, but once you park yours next to a 98+, and your greeted by HID's, better looking seats, console, wood, and more powerful engine, 5speed tranny, more option, nicer key fob, as well as AUTO windows in all corners, you will then recognize the huge difference. The choice is yours in the end. You asked, and you recieved.

<---- just sold his 98 LS400 after his friend with a 96LS drolled over it for years.

I ended up purchasing the '96 LS yesterday night. Thanks for all the replies!! I've been looking for about a month and this is by far the best one..one owner, all service records(for the most part), clean!! I would have to say better than all the UCF21 I looked at, as far as condition.

I think there were about two people that answered my question, "Is this a good Price?". It sounded like it was. Oh well even if it wasn't it's too late now. And all that matters is what I think, and I think I got a great deal!

I understand what everybody is saying as far as upgrades to the UCF21 but my main limitation was $$$. For me to step up to a UCF 21 I would go over my limit. Plus I have my Supra TT for the days I really want to feel performance. This puts everything into perspective for me as far as performance.

GRAND_LS 4, take a look at the numbers and explain to me the difference in 0-60 and quarter mile times. I do/did a lot of runs in my life and I know how to look at these numbers. The UCF21 finishes the 1/4 in 14.9 while the UCF20 finishes in 15.2, a three tenth difference. Not much of a difference when you are in the High 14s, low 15s..three tenth of a difference means more if both cars were in the 12s. So the UCF21 does 0-60 in about 1.5 seconds faster then the UCF20, so when the UCF21 is at 60 mph and finishing the 1/4 mile the UCF20, from the same point, caught up about a second to finish the 1/4 mile. Doesn't this mean that the UCF20 is faster somewhere? I think so!

Please don't get me wrong the UCF21 is overall a better performing vehicle. Let's just say your car is faster.

I really don't understand some of the replies here, wouldn't you guys rather purchase a LS 430 instead of a UCF21? I would think a girlfriend or any one of us would drool looking at a LS 430 not a LS 400??? I know it's a little more $$ but if you guys are telling to save for a UCF21, why not save for a UCF30??? You get a new generation not just a new series..

First off, congrats on the purchase! A clean UCF20 is a beautiful thing.

For me (first off), I could not afford a LS 430; the LS 400s can be half the price of a nice 430. Secondly, the styling differences alone make the 430 less unique (almost too Benz-like), and a different car. The UCF20 and UCF21 speak to my taste much better. The price difference in a UCF20 and 21 will most likely be less than a UCF21 and 30 as well.

I disagree with you about the LS 430 and your comment about Benz like appearence. I like the LS b/c it's similar to the German Cars but it has Lexus Reliability. If the German automobiles had Japanese Reliability, I think Lexus and Infiniti and Acura would lose a lot business!

You're right about the price difference from a 400 to a 430 but there is a price difference between the UCF 20 and 21. It's all relative to what you can afford. If I was going to spend $4K for a good condition UCF21, I would rather pay $12K for a good condition UCF30.. But that's me, I'm looking at this differently than you. If you have a UCF20 why would you save to upgrade to a UCF21? Save a bit longer and buy a 430?? $8500 for a good condition UCF20 seems like a good price and $12K for a good condition UCF21 seems like a good price. If I had to choose right now which one I would buy I would pick the UCF20, but once again this is my opinion.

steveski, I had a '95 and loved it... had 132k when I bought it and put almost 15k on it. I always wanted a '00 because of the updates and found a one owner, fully reconditioned gem from a dealer w/ 43k with full maintenance records for 21k. Cheap? Not really. I also purchased a Lexus platinum warranty (4 yr/50k) for another 2k. Cheap? Not really but I was out the door for less than 25k...about the price of a new civic. Expensive by some standards, but the car is in PERFECT mechanical and cosmetic condition. It'll last me 10 years w/ no problem. In the end, IMHO, a very good bargain!

Its not that I don't like that it is similiar to the benz...I just feel the 400 was more unique than the 430 in looks. I am definitely a fan of japanese cars that compete with higher priced german cars (I also own a 93 acura legend LS sedan, back in the day a BMW competitor of sorts)

If I had a UCF20 I would stick with it...I could not find ANY UCF20s that were blk/blk and had low mileage, or I would have bought one early on;but basically since I was already going to be taking out a loan, I figured 11k vs 8k wasn't a big deal for me. I don't need the HIDs, extra woodgrain, better MPG and power...but I don't mind it

The 1998-2000 LS400s have more gadgets to go bad. Air suspension on some, VVTi, navigation, HIDs, and the list goes on - nice when they work, but will be expensive to fix
