AC whine HELP.
Ok guys i've searched and searched. IS it normal for the AC to whine loudly? Is this the beginning of the end? I drove my car today in nice 70 F weather and thought i'd turn on the ac. AC is nice and cold but it whined loudly. Its louder than the engine. Is it just loud because i haven't used the ac in 4 months? I'm gonna try to record a clip.

You sure your car isn't supercharged? ...j/k
Two thoughts: ac compressor or the compressor pulley. My friends MBZ made the same noise, his ac was blowing nice cold air as well, but when he swapped compressors, the noise went away.
I know that explanation sucks, but I got to do my A/C as well before it gets hot as hell out here in CA.

DON'T use the air con until you get this sorted !!!!!!
If your compressor is on the way out then it will be sending metal bits throughout your system , it goes from the compressor through the condensor [ which by the way is a one tube type condensor so it can be flushed ] then through your filter/dryer and then to the evaporator , hopefully your dryer/filter is not more than 2 years old so any crud will stop there , if not it will mean evaporator out , new TX valve , full flush new dryer/filter and new compressor.
It may be to late already and at the least it's a new compressor and new dryer/filter and a condensor flush , anything less is just asking for more trouble .
As a note to all , if you fit a new dryer/filter and regas every 2 years you will have trouble free air con , even if the compressor destroys itself the not too old dryer/filter will catch all the crud and just a flush of the condensor plus a new comporessor will be enough .

I don't think it is from the sound of it. It's the fan clutch in front that is bad. It's a white fan. The fan might be ok but the clutch is bad. Find a junk yard that sell the fan and/or clutch. I got one from a junk yard for $35.00 back in 2003. An alternative is to modify it to electric. http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/cooling/
Do a test: have AC off. give it gas(pull the gas cable in the engine compartment), does the Engine fan on all the time and speed up with engine speed, fan wine louder as you give it more gas? IF the answer is yes, then it's the fan clutch. If not, then other things.

Hello,
same sound in my 92 LS 400 for almost 8 years now. The sound appeared with the new compressor. I have the system serviced now every 2 years, since I had big trouble with the whole ac system. But the sound still drives me crazy.
