I think I'd better post here some from Japan but this is only about the domestic Celsior models in Japan.
Things are written below,
----------------------
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%...82%B7%E3%82%AA
型式はUCF10/11・20/21・30/31が存在し、“0”で終わるものはコイルサスペンション装備、“1”で終わるものはエアサスペンション装備の車両である。
In English.
There are model codes UCF10/11, 20/21, 30/31. Ending 0 means a model with coil suspensions and 1 air suspensions.
-------------------
I don't know this is related to the US model Lexus LS400 but here in Japan, we strictly distinguish models using 0 for coil and 1 for air suspensions.
Best wishes.

Arigato gozaimas, Yamae-san! This is a great help!
If I may impose, can you shed any light on the other codes used by Lexus?
Example taken from a nameplate:
C/TR: 1E0/LB21 UCF30L - AETGKA
I am pretty sure that 1E0/LB21 is exterior/interior color, UCF is chassis & factory air susp (in non-US markets)
L is left-hand drive, and the last "A" is destination market (A=USA, K = Canada).
Does anyone know what the acronym "UCF" stands for, and the AETGK following the hyphen?
A/TM: B03A/A761E
What is the meaning of B03A and A761E ?
Thanks for your help.

it's been explained but UCF is the first letter of the engine code (U) and the chassis designation (CF).
A/TM=Axle/Transmission, B03A is the rear end code (which toyota made NON universal so they are model specific lol), and A761e is the trans model (that's for an LS430)

this is still a ? after a quick read threw, i dont really see how the (1) means air. a 97 has diff head lights yet has my tail lights, i drive a 98? so what a 97 is the same as my 98? i dont see Mercedes giving diff codes for diff options, 04 CL no matter what model 55, 500.. is a W212 because the W212 is from 02-06 (might b off a yr or so) but you get what im saying. yes 2 diff car companys but its an ex. i still say ucf21 just to be safe plus i have the facelifted model.

'95-00 are the SAME CHASSIS (UCF2x, ie LS (UCF) chassis 2nd (2x) generation)
if your LS didnt come with air susp. in the US, it's a UCF20L-AEAGKA chassis code. Go look on your trim tag (driver's door jamb) and your core support if you don't believe me.
also, '97 has both different headlights and different taillights from your '98. BUT the actual chassis (incl. suspension and many major body panels/glass) is the same and interchangeable. this is also why '95-97 owners can bolt on the entire '98-00 front end to their cars without any modification.
the mercedes example is totally irrelevant as different manufacturers use totally different internal naming schemes.

I only know some about domestic version of Celsior and I don't know much about LS400. But I will write as much as I know.
C/TR stands for Color / Trim and your guess is correct.
I will write 1 example picking up from Japanese model's nameplate UCF31-AETQK.
I skip UCF31 since it is widely discussed here at CL. We don't have L after the figures.
I explain AETQK following the hyphen.
“A” means Celsior.
“E” indicates the body type and “E” means SEDAN.
“T” means Floor type AT with 6 gears.
“Q” indicates the grade. “N” for the grade A, “G” for the grade B, “Q” for the grade C.
“K” indicates the Engine type and "K" is for DOHC EFI.
Your code "AETGK" has "G" instead of "Q". This is the only difference.
Regarding A/TM, PureDrifter has kindly explained it already.
I used to work and live in San Diego CA. due to my job assignment as an electronics engineer. That made me to speak some English and Spanish. I still have many friends who enjoy DIY there and I am writing what I am doing these days for them at my blog. My limited English is not enough to explain things and I am putting photos a lot for their better understanding. You must be finding strange expressions there but I am hoping some of them are useful for my friends to keep and improve their car.

Wait hold on...if the "1" specifies a/s option...then what's that say about the UCF10 and UCF11...or the UCF30 or UCF31. The "1" represents that it is a different model than the UCF20. That "1" does not justify that those models have a particular option, it means that they are just simply a make-over of the previous model...
UCF10 89-92
UCF11 93-94
UCF20 95-97
UCF21 98-00
UCF30 01-03
UCF31 04-06
UCF10 89-92
UCF11 93-94
UCF20 95-97
UCF21 98-00
UCF30 01-03
UCF31 04-06
that's odd as my 1998 UCF20 TOYOTA CELSIOR is a UCF20...
and my 1991 UCF11 TOYOTA CELSIOR was a UCF11.
