The only thing I miss from the Legend is the sporty almost BMW ride in that coupe. But the LS handles pretty good just has alot of body roll, but it sticks to the road pretty good.

I've seen a couple of people float from the Acura crowd to the toyota. The LS will cost more when it breaks but for the most part, it doesnt break often.

I am really not looking for a sporty ride or handling. My preference is for a smooth comfortable ride, and I think the Avalon and Lexus can both deliver ... the LS400 delivers more and it also costs quite a bit more, so I need to evaluate how much more its worth to me to get the extras offered by the Lexus.

Again I have to ask, what year LS400 and what year Toyota Avalon are you comparing?

Hmm....keep in mind driving the ls400 you may have a nice 'feel good' aspect of driving a lexus instead of a toyota, even though it's the same company. The lexus does have it's nicer aspects. Make a list of pro's and con's and have some fun with it.

I think you may have missed the point of this post ... I was asking for some help in identifying the pros and cons.

While it is very true for some people, I would like to think the brand name of the car will not affect my purchase decision or my enjoyment of a car.

Well....for smooth and comfy i'd have to go w/the LS hands down.

I used to own an avalon ('99) and while it was nice..it really is just a dolled up camry with seating for 6 (shifter on steering column), The LS is in a completely different class.
