i did that first.

the fluid is nice red and clean. steering computer didnt do anything.

Well nothing lost on flush & screen clean, good maintenance. Is your hard steering at idle? If so, a good suspect might be the air control valve on the pump. It is designed to give a "boost" to the steering at low rpms.

it does puff a bit of white smoke on startup so it probably is bad... but the power steering is hard all the time even when driving. would that be the culprit then? i think i got a spare one on my spare ps pump.

When driving the p/s stiffens up as you drive, but I don't know what degree you're experiencing. If you got a spare on hand... I say go for it. Especially with the puff of smoke on start up. Let us know how it works out for you.

it feels as if there is no power assist in the steering at all.
