brakes...$1525..now I've seen everything
Am I nuts..........i need brakes and rotors for a 96 LS400..........I called my local lexus dealer......they want MORE THAN $1500..........it seems in my humble opinion they are criminals..............
R1 concepts has rotors and pads for less than $200 on the bay with almost 20k positive feedback...........anybody use them? My mechanic will put them all on for a few bucks.
Also quick question......are the rotors with the drilled holes better than the standard..they cost about $30.00 more.
thanks

Unless the road to work is a track with a hammerhead in it there's no real need for drilled rotors. They look cool but they are prone to cracking. Under normal driving conditions they really aren't necessary.

Thankfully you realize that $1500 is robbery. I was dreading to read "I just paid $1500 for brakes - did I get ripped off??" Heheh..
For $1500 you better be able to take them with you and put them on your next 2 cars!

Do it your self.
With some basic metric tools and also some anti-seize, brakeklean, and some anti-vibration/anti-squeel goo, you can do the entire car's rotors and brakes in a few hours.
all for the cost of 2 sets of pads and four rotors.
should come to around $400 total.
screw $1500 unless you got that kind of time/money (cough cough ego cough)

$1,500 at the stealer sounds right. If you put Toyota rotors and brakes = $500, front and rear brake antisquil kit (required when changing pads) = $100
$600 just parts and $120 per hour labor for one day of work. Just right. You can put cheap rotors and pads yourself = $400 but I would recomend OEM rotors and pads.

I use OEM Lexus/Toyota Pads with Mountain Rotors from Japan.
(Drivewire had the rotors and I think I got pads from irontoad last time)

you can reuse your existing shims, unless they are completely trashed. just clean them off and make sure you grease between the pad/inner shim and inner/outer shim.
i think book time for brake service is around 1 hour per axle. i dont know how that one forum member figured a whole day to replace rotors and pads on all four corners

I agree. If you want OE quality non drilled rotors Brembo blanks are a great choice. I don't really consider OEM rotors to be of that great quality anyway. They are good, but not $600 good. I've been using aftermarket rotors like Brembo/Bradi on everything from my NSX to Legend in drilled and slotted for years and they have never cracked or warped on me ever. I personally never resurface rotors and just get a new set when I need new pads since they are cheap. Brake pads usually last me about 40K-50K+ miles.
