I was set on buying a LS400 until...
I test drove a 1999 Jaguar XJR.
First off, I've been shopping around for a 1998-2000 LS400, and I came across a beautiful Black LS4 at a local dealer. Parked right next to it was a British Racing Green XJR, the salesperson convinced me to take a test drive in both and see which one I liked more, so I though what the heck and hopped into the XJR.
Let me say this, the XJR is not a LS4, and the LS4 is not a XJR. The demeanor of the two vehicles are sedate when in cruising mode, but the Jaguar was a different animal when throttle was applied. To put it simply, the cat is fast and agile. Not on that, the suspension is not as floaty as the LS4; and to top it off, the curves on the car are just plain sexy.
One downfall about the cat is "weird" ergonomics. The instrument cluster is set so deep within the dash it was sometime hard to pick out the speedometer reading, moreover, the car just didn't have the feel of assessibilty of a LS4. I actually felt a bit cramped if you can believe it. I still want the LS4 because I am still weary of the Jaguar's reliablity, but now I wish Lexus would have added some additional power to their flagship...

fangtl, COST of ownership? Warranty? Shop availability? Just a couple of quick thoughts.
I also LOVE the Jag's look. It is a definite BABE magnet. But, the logical decision is the LS400. Install a torque converter and I would bet it would out run the Jag. Suspension can be changed but the luxury ride is EASY to get used to. Also, the Jag is better at attracting babes but not too functional if a room is not available The LS400 has ENOUGH room to operate
Let us know what you decide.
BTW, what was the price for the Jag?
