Haven't been able to locate a GOOD used one...when you look inside, it looks worse than mine. Maybe I should ask a machine shop if they can repack it?

Any further info available from ayone on this noise?

I have similar noise on 1993 LS400 150,000 miles. My theroy is that it is not the compressor at all - I think it is the electrical load on the alternator. I get similar noise if lights and other acessories are on. The a/c compressor clutch and a/c fan are big electrical current users so I think it loads the alternator like the lights.

I think problem is bad alternator. Noisy under load. I am investigating further

Appreciate any thoughts

Herm

OK , just had mine apart by the air con Tiger GOD !!
Mine had started to rumble with the air con on but quiet if the air con was off = no load .
The front bearing in the nose cone of the compressor is a double row bearing and of course it's running all the time with the compressor on or not , as long as the pulley with the belt on it is turning then so is that bearing .
So at 17 years and 200,000 odd K's I think it's done very very well .
Mine sounded ok when you spun it , but if you shook it [ the bearing ] it rattled !!
Replaced the bearing fitted a new front seal and some new "O" rings here and there , a new filter/dryer and ....more silent than a mouse that's dead !!
Awesome result , the compressor itself was fine , mind you if you leave replacing that bearing toooo long and it spins in the nose cone housing , bye bye compressor , time for a new one !!
