1998 Lexus Phone Removal
#2
Remove the receiver from the trunk and plug the two disconnected wires that result from the removal into each other. The handset can be removed by disassembling the upper console and then disconnecting the wires going to the handset.

Assuming your 98 LS is like my 00 LS ...
After you remove the phone ECU from the trunk, if you want to you could attach the large connectors and cables to the bottom of the tool box housing - behind the trim panel - where they are attached on cars without phones. There may also be a smaller white multipin connector which is also normally taped to the larger cables and tucked up under the tool box.
You will also see the antenna coax cable which leads to the phone antenna imprinted on the inside of the rear window. And you will likely see a second coax cable which leads to an antenna connector under the air vents in the center console.
Some of what you will see depends on which phone you have -- the fixed or the Portable Plus. The two coax cables in the trunk may be plugged together to activate the antenna coax connection under the center console.
To remove the handset holder from the upper console tray, you may have to carefully pry the black insert out by working around the perimeter. The insert snaps into place. A thin blade wide putty knife works well - I usually tape the knive blade with electrical tape.
Once you remove the tray insert, it should be obvious how to remove the handset holder. One person on another forum hid the the holes in the tray insert with a thin black mouse pad that he cut to fit the tray insert and glued into place.
Be careful not to break the tray insert because it is not available as a separate part -- be gentle!
A tutorial I did a few years back show some of the connectors and other parts you will be dealing with --> http://home.kc.rr.com/colchester/pho...%20install.doc
