Could be completely unrelated, but has he checked for proper fuel? I know on the early 1UZ-FE cars like the SC400/LS400 and such the fuel pump ECU was known to fail. On my SC400, the symtoms where the engine would crank and start, stay running for about 1-2 seconds, then die. Crank again, the car would start, and die in the exact same way. Then, all of a sudden, the car would start and run fine for a day or even longer, then no start again. I ended up bypassing the 1st stage of the 2 stage fuel pump ECU to solve my problem. This may not be your problem, but it is simple to check for fuel, air and spark. I find it hard to believe that a faulty AFM would cause the car to NOT start. I ran a wrecked parts car SC400 with that same engine without the entire AFM and AFM housing to move back and forth between the garage and side of the house where it was stored before.

Default Engine dies

My 1993 ls400 with 279000 miles was running great very reliable. One day it just died while I was driving, I drifted to the shoulder and it wouldn't turn over like it was out of gas. After a few minutes it started and I drove it to my mechanic (had to keep foot on the gas and brake to keep it from turning off). Once I got to the mechanic the car actually was running normally. Drove home and the next day it died again and restarted 2 times Finally I had it towed to the shop and the diagnosis begins. To make a long story short after checking all of the usual suspects. It turned out to be a bad fuel relay pump fuse

With throttle body blocked like your describing it may have misfired. Check the timing marks. It may have jumped time. I would have thought. It wouldn't. Start with the throttle body blocked.
