i got 200 miles off 20 gallons but I get like 12mpg all city driving. it's a pain in the butt since its around $70 a week and i'm only a high school student. i see you guys averaging around 17-20mpg for your cars, what can i do to improve this? I do have a pretty light foot.

?????? theres nothing else for me to tune up. i did all the tune up i needed and more. my cousin is a lexus mechanic. so i flush everything out more than normal. my oil gets flush out every 2 months even though i dont need it. all my tranny fluid, brake fluid, and differential fluid gets flushed every 6 month regardless of mileage. i just did my water pump, timing belt, tensioner, distributor cap/rotor, spark plug wires, spark plugs, i changed out all my bushings before i dropped my car. uhhhhhh the only thing that i know is leaking on my motor is the ERG pipe. I just have to change the normal wear and tear stuff like motor mounts, and tranny mounts. other than that what else is there to do. i use fuel injector cleaner from the dealership once a month. i use 91 octane chevron gas. my tire pressure is always around 35psi - 38psi. my first concern was reliability on my car before i even though if modifying it. o yea i replaced the ECM too because of the whole freeway shutting off, stuttering and bad idle.

Sometimes I think the controversy surrounding fuel economy numbers comes from a misunderstanding of how to calculate it. The dollars don't matter and the gauge doesn't matter. All that matters is miles driven divided by gallons it takes to FILL the tank.

I've heard many stories about 200 miles on half tank. Or on $XX worth. Fill the car up, drive it, record the miles, fill it up again. Fill it up the same way, either top if off or don't top it off, but be consistent. But FILL it. Don't stop when the money runs out or when you are blown away by how much it is. Either fill it or don't calculate it.

Reminds me of when I took a 97 4runner to my daughter from Colorado to California. I got 22 mpg average on the trip. When I got there, my son in law filled it up. He has the most annoying habit of topping off the tank. Which is illegal in CA and most other places. But, he can squeeze more gas in than I could ever believe way after the tank is full in my mind. So naturally, the calculation on the last leg of my trip was substantially less mpg than my first because he put in more gas than I would have. Same goes for the other way. If you topped like he does, then stopped at the first click the next time, the calculations are affected significantly also.

BTW, my day job is not that of a math teacher, financial analyst or fighter pilot. Just a marginally educated (in the public system) cave-man car salesman.

On our last trip to Portland (Oregon) we got 26.1mpg on the highway which blows me away for a V8 with 312k miles on it. Lexus just rocks.
