Am I nuts for thinking about buying a 96 LS400 with 198k on it?

And...nothing against BMW but there is no comparison with the BMW in terms of reliability. BMW is a driver's car no doubt but I'd take the LS any day of the week.

update:

test drove the car tonight at night time...

Interior: 8.5 of 10

very clean no cracks at all and in great shape
light for the climate control is very dim
radio light is fine..
windows, sunroof, all lights work fine

exterior

3 dings I big few scratches nothing big over all a solid 8.5 out of 10

under hood 6.5 of 10

dirty motor no leaks however never cleaned it
hood support are shot
ABS motor is unplugged becauce it was kicking in when the owner was slowing down instead of fixing it they just had the mechanic unplug the motor I guess

ABS/trac light kept on flasing on dash

accelarated fine, idles fine, brakes fine, and drives straight..
will not budge on price despite the abs, hood strut and dim climate issue
the hood sturts and dim light is no big deal Im worried about having no
abs and traction with winter comming up.

I would pass this one because of the ABS and trac. $5500 can buy a much better car than this one.

don't buy any german car with high miles! they will rape you in repairs. it wouldn't be a big deal to put in a new or used trac unit. or it might just be a wheel speed sensor. i'd have it diagnosed and then decide from there if you want the car depending on how much the repair costs.
if the rest of the car is as nice as youdescribe, it might still be a good deal.

yeah, pass on it though mine has a busted up interior and a couple dents, the motor and brakes function fine and I spent $4000 on it. You can find a better one for $5 easily

Here are some recent LS400 prices - actual prices of what people paid.

http://www.pricehub.com/price/Lexus/LS400

I had a 1992 SC300 with 162,000 miles. I was sad to sell it, but that car would run forever. You can't make a bad decision getting any Lexus.
