All The Above Synthetic Oils Are Great I Use The Redline Gl5 For Limited Slip Rear Ends Which Some Of The Lexus Rear Ends Are. Yes Synthetic Lube Does Cost More And That Is Why Bmw Mercedes And All High End Cars Are Now Using It Including Porche And They Change The Motor Oil At Around 15to 18,000 Miles And No Problems. Amsoil Is Probably The Best Followed By Mobil One Redline Royal Purple Etc. They Are All Very Good For The Lexus By The Way Somebody Took A 99 Lexus Supercharged The Motor To 1000 Horse Power With Out Any Modification And It Has No Problems This Is How Good The Lexus Motor Is Anothe Story Is That The Lexus Motor Is The Only Car Motor That Can Come From The Crate And Put Into An Airplane The Only Car Engine In The World That Is Able To Do That Faa Approved Due To It's Quailty. Bmw Mercedes Try That.
Anyways, I just changed my diff oil on Tuesday... replaced it with some Mobil 1 synthetic 75W-90. Next up is to change my trans mount and flush the transmission fluid.

first off, the max. ive ever seen anyone take a 98-00 1uz motor has been 500hp. the 1st gen can take a lot more power but 98-00 had MUCH skinnier/weaker rods than the VVT-i model.
got any sources for your FAA claim as well?
oh, and no Lexus, aside from the 1st gen IS, came with an LSD option.
first you started off with the whole "i put regular mobil1 atf in my trans and it works" claim, which we all know is untrue, and now this.

This is Gear Oil folks!!
If you are as ignorant as some of the people posting here it is quite likely that you would do more harm than good attempting this procedure.
If you do not have the capacity to suction the old oil from the rear diff you are not smart enough to proceed!!

theres a drain bolt....
id just flush some new oil through it with the drain open to get the leftover fluid out, put the drain bolt back, and fill it up.

Synthetic may be better, but didn't toyota just fill these with convential from the factory? I sincerely doubt mine has ever been changed and I am at 155k miles with no problem. I doubt a synthetic oil in the differential would make a huge difference in how long it lasts. Use regular convential oil and change it every 100K miles and you should be okay. I'll use walmart 80-90 supertech oil when I get ready to change mine.

Well... let's not get into another conventional vs. synthetic debate here.
I use synthetic for the peace of mind and placebo effect. I use synthetic motor oil and I've noticed I get slightly better gas mileage (I also did other things, so that may actually have no effect) and it helps me sleep better at night. How much of a difference it makes, I don't care. I'm ready and willing to pay 2-3x as much as "normal" gear oil or motor oil just to make myself feel better.

In a car that doesn't tow anything, isn't driven hard, and isn't subjected to extended drains, or other harsh conditions, synthetic gear lube won't make a noticeable difference. I personally use Red Line 75W90 synthetic gear lube for the added protection it offers, but with or without a synthetic, my differential will be just fine for the conditions I subject it to.

For my transfer case and rear differential in my RX, I use Royal Purple 75W90 and I put MAJOR STRESS on my drivetrain. (see photo at left)
However, I think anything like Amsoil, Redline, Mobil 1 or Royal Purple is just fine for the uses you have.
