Timing Belt tensioner change?

not a must, but in my case, once the opened up the motor, they found out that it was a bit worn, bearing had some play, so make sure they are good before you finish the job.

Yeah,
I would change it too. It is the ONLY thing holding the belt tight all of these miles. The hydraulic piston is separate from the bearing assembly part of the tensioner, but they go and in hand.
Change them both for peace of mind.

Definitely change it when doing the timing belt. It's too much money to have to go back in and change it if it fails. Also do the idler pulleys and cam and crank seals. Also recommended is to change the water pump.

I wonder that if the t-belt is changed at the dealer if they normally "automatically" install the tensioner and seals? The 1991 LS400 I am likely buying had the t-belt replaced at the dealer 13K ago. However, the guy that has it now did not have it done and he was not sure. They did charge $1200., so I assume it was changed. Thanks.

13540-50030 Tensioner (pinky finger resemblance)
13503-0F010 Idler Pulley, #2, Left (round bearing) oem by Koyo
13505-50022 Idler Pulley, #1, Right (has pivot mounting point) oem by NSK
All of these parts make up a timing belt kit. They should all be changed, no question.

When I was in there I noticed that I had to change the left camshaft pully. It was ruined when the water pump went out on my 1990 LS400 (140000 miles).
Left camshaft PULLEY 13056-50011 $75.38
Since I had the alternator off I decided to take a lot at the contact bushing in it. It also needed to be changed. To change it takes 5 min.
Alternator bushing HOLDER 27370-75060 $13.82

I have read that the fan bracket went bad on a member and that they wished they would have changed it then. I am glad I checked the alternator. They are durable and the only typical replaceable part is the bushing. Hopefully it will last a long time. I thought to my self "these are great cars better to do it right the first time"

I went thru virtually that same list when I did my first TB change on my 94 back when it had 168,000 & the Fan Bracket bearing seized.
Here is a good deal on a replacement from a California based Dealer.
I see numerous other places where the Irontoad prices can be improved upon, not to be critical.

A good rule of thumb is to try & find out who the OEM was on the compenent that came on your LS.
Example: Nippondenso 10PA20C AC Compressor
Spark Plug Wires: NGK TE132s (LS400 app) are available for $88.00
Idler bearing #1 (Koyo) & idler bearing #2 (NSK) can be purchased for under $100.00 combined.
I think you can get even better deals when bought as a TB kit.
