Thinking about 18s...thoughts?
Hey folks,
I always assumed I'd get a nice set of 19's, some coilovers, and drop the car not too aggressively, but my thoughts are starting to change now.
This is my only car, so slamming it is kind of out of the question for me. I live in the middle of downtown Seattle, so the roads are absolute crap out here, and I have to make it up some pretty steep driveways. Not to mention, I even take the car in the snow for ski trips! Also, looking on tirerack at the price of 19" tires makes me go And since I commute daily, I want to maintain as much comfort as I can. I want to get that blend of decent handling, and still maintain a comfortable ride.
So now I'm rethinking my exterior plans for the car, and this is what it looks like:
- Set of 18s, maybe the 3GS wheels, maybe aftermarket staggered
- Tint
- Megan coilovers with slight drop (mostly for handling)
- HIDs (4300 K)
And I don't think I'll be buying a body kit anytime soon. I just can't justify the cost or practicality. I've got 211K on this car, and I plan to drive it another 4-5 years (till I hit 300K), at which point I'll look into getting something new.
What do you think? Will that be enough to give it the look that I want, or will it be too subtle? Any other thoughts?

For what you want to do, I would go with 18s.
I had the same feeling, that i wanted 19s or bigger since they look great on a big body sedan, but I have to drive mine daily.
Between the ride quality loss and cost of 19"+ rubber, I went 18s and would do it again.

after my suspension work yesterday...i am loving the stock wheel/tire setup. I'm afraid if I get big 19' wheels I will start to hate the ride and probably bend the wheels left and right. I commute 100 miles everyday, i need a comfortable and reliable car. If I ever get the money to upgrade rims, i might just go with gen3 stock 18" since they will fit and JWL approved.

no drop, yeah I know it would look better but I want a nice ride.

Ouch Seattle! Yeah I wouldn't want to lower mine much at all either!
I personally love the look of cars lowered on their stock wheels.
3rd gen stockies are BEAUTIFUL
and always remember to lower the car before you put wheels on, or both at the same time. cars with custom wheels that aren't lowered just look really funny

I have 18's on my 92 and the ride comfort has not suffered any. I am dropped on H&R springs, along with the Daizen bushings, and I still have a fair amount of rubber to protect the rims and ride comfort has only gotten firmer and a little more sporty and responsive with the upgrades. My car is my "daily driver" and I live in Baltimore City, so I understand the road situation. A nice set of 18's will do you good and you will still be happy with the ride. Here is a pic of mine with 235/40/18,,

Optimal rim backspacing and tire size for 18's
My wifes 97 LS and my 94 LS are getting dedicated summertime 18's this spring and I would like to know from you guys:
For each model year, what is the optimal rim back spacing to use to effectively fill in the gaps and...
For each model year, what would be the best looking and most functional 18 inch tire size to use that would fill the gaps without rubbing.
Just to let you know, both cars have 1 in. suspension drops on H&R sport springs.
My thoughts on the subject: I was considering using 235/50R18 but understand through TireRack that it would require the fenders to be rolled to avoid rubbing, so now I am considering 235/45R18 or even 235/40R18. Please tell me what you've tried and liked or even didn't. Pics would really be convincing along with your opinion.
Thanks guys. I love this site.

How bad is the roads up where you live? cant be worse then oahu, just to let you know i drove with stretched falkens and the ride was stiff, but the generals(same size) man oh they do there job. way more cushion and softer ride, and they last long! also handles good enough. get 19's and slam it. and when winter comes around raise it and throw your winter wheels on! Don't you wanna be Bippu!
