Post transmission flush or not

Sonyman,

I see transmission filters for less than $50. Is that what you guys are referring to in regards to "filter"? Many of you guys suggest cleaning the screen. So the "screen" has nothing to do with the transmission filter? The transmission filter I see is metal plate with gasket and looks like places for those magnets. PLMK.

Since your fluid is black, it may also be a good idea to drop the transmission pan and have the screen cleaned out. Your transmission uses a reusable mesh screen filter and additionally has magnets inside the pan to trap ferrous particles. There may be some buildup on the screen and magnets that will remain inside the transmission unless cleaned through a pan drop. Normally this isn't needed, but normally the transmission fluid is not allowed to turn black.

I never took it apart myself, but apparently the screen and filter are the same thing - you remove it after the pan is removed, and you can either replace it or clean it. The pan itself however has magnets that attract metal particles.

Now if your oil is black, its a bad sign. It means that the transmission oil has already lost its properties and isnt lubricating your transmission the way it suposed to, or it could be the previous owner filling the tranny with wrong fluid.

You should remove the pan, clean it out and replace/clean the filter, and then do full flush (non machine). You transmission oil should be red.

The screen is a part of that filter, yes. If order to access the filter you will have to drop the transmission pan, and then you can clean out the magnets inside the pan as well.

If you're going to do it, find out whether you will need new gaskets for the pan and the filter.

Och,

...but of course the screen is NOT included with the new transmission filter right? So the gasket that comes with the transmission filter kit is just for the filter, and not for the actual pan right?

The screen is a part of the filter, so obviously it is included.

As far as the gasket, you need to find out from the dealer. The gasket in that picture looks pretty large, so it might be the pan gasket.

Hrmm.. maybe I'm thinking of something else -- but I thought the gasket for the tranny pan was a FIPG? High temp RTV?

I have no idea, but I don't think it matters, you could probably use either RTV or a gasket. Usually its less mess with a gasket.

Yes less mess -- but I just had a discussion about this FIPG gasket,.. can't remember if we were talking about a tranny pan though. Anyhow ,the discussion was the paper gasket WOULD leak if you used one. That is why waterpumps and such items use FIPG gaskets to be , well, water tight for a LONG time.

By the way I take my lexus every 40,000 miles to a place here in Southern California Tustin Transmission and have them drop the pan clean the screen which is always clean and check for any material that might be in the pan and so far in 200,000 miles nothing found these lexus trans are really bullet proof, a friend of mine put 568,000 miles on the same transmission on his 1990 lexus.
