How To: Removing the phone from the center armrest console

Here, you can see where the wiring for the phone ran behind the air duct, and in the left side, the plug that has to be disconnected. Again, you can see the holes for the friction fittings, and lemme tell ya, they're the BEST fittings I've ever come across. All the rest of the friction fittings I had to deal with for this were a walk in the park compared to just THOSE TWO! At this point, it's fairly simple to figure out what I did. Disconnect the white plug in that pic, and remove that wire for the phone.
For those removing the portable version of the dealer installed Lexus phone, the cable from the handset holder will be plugged into a similar connector on the opposite (driver) side of the console by the air duct. Attached is a photo. The yellow wire in the photo is the mute wire from a Nokia phone kit I installed. All one has to do to get a phone kit, Bluetooth or otherwise, to mute the radio when a call is in progress is to strip a bit of insullation off the mute wire, stick it the front center hole in the connector, and secure it with a plastic wire tie.
When removing a portable Lexus phone, it will also be necessary to disconnect the antenna coax cable near the two white connectors under the console.

I just wanted to revive this old thread to say thank you, from this recent buyer of a 99 LS400. The details were slightly different on my car, but most of your instructions were helpful and I was able to get rid of the obsolete phone in about 10 minutes. The tutorials on this forum are really helpful to me and have already saved me quite a bit of time and money!
