Olddog, just a question, how many miles does your LS have?

At that mileage I'd actually suggest replacing the springs and struts. After 150k miles the struts and springs in the car are definitely tired. Go with KYB shocks for the ride closest to OEM.

i agree with NJ240sxMan... no point in replacing one thing and then having to change something else 10k miles later.

Given that -- What would spings and struts all the way around run on a 94 LS 400? Cheapest, but still good. From what I read, the parts that give factory type ride quality but not much performance increase are much cheaper than the parts that give substanital handling increase but you lose ride quality.

I'm more interested in ride quality.

I wouldn't mind lowering the car a half inch or so, (only slightly) if I'm going to put aftermarket springs on. Just curious where you would point me.

If some spings and shocks, and struts hehe.. could be had for 5-600$ then take the car into a decent suspension shop for installation, of say 400$.. A grand for such wouldn't be bad imo.

It has 229k, so it is tired, but nothing that can't wait.. But I bet it would be a drastic difference in ride quality.

dropping a car such as the LS will have an affect on ride quality, but it is usually a more sporty feel which is nice as well.

Yeah I realize that -- lower center of gravity = better handling. But also negates some of the ride quality.

Which is why I mention half an inch or so. This is on the low side of lowering, and shouldn't make a drastic difference in ride quality or performance. Slightly worsening one, and slightly increasing the other.

However, with my 230k suspension, I almost think a half inch drop with NEW components would make the ride quality better than it currently is. Simply because the suspension with 14yrs and 230k miles is operating at 25% capacity imo. New suspension , even rated more harsh than 'NEW' stock suspension.. will be less harsh than the OLD worn out stock suspension on there now. Make sense?

So I would be getting an improvement both ways,.. If my thinking is correct.

dropping any car will effect the ride quality, you are after all taking away suspension travel....now to what degree is determined by the valving of the shock you choose and the spring rate of the spring.

nobody makes .5" lowering springs for the LS, they START at 1-1.5". for the best ride and moderate lowering i would recco H&R for the 1st gen (Eibach for the 2nd). Tanabe's springs are much softer and will get you another .5-1" lower but wont work that great with the softly valved KYB.

oh, and install shouldnt be more than 300, and if you're wiling to undo a few bolts and take out the rear seat, it should be even less than that.

AND for Olddog..if you ride has alot of miles on it then i would consider changing both springs and struts...but thats just my opinion.
Make sure you cut at least 2 layers off the bumper stops (in the rear), or your car will bounce like a rabbit above 45Mph. Take my word.
