1994 LS 400 - Cost of maintenance
#16
Well I told the guy that I am still interested, but I wouldn't go near the asking price of $5750. He asked me what I was willing to give for it? Lets say that it does have 155k on, what would be a good price for a first offer now? You think I can go as low as $4000? Would it be worth $4700? If I ever do decide to resell it, the resale value will definitely be lower if they know the mileage isn't correct. The car looks to be in excellent shape from the pictures, but I haven't seen the engine or test driven it yet.
Good call. Have the car checked out for 80$ from Lexus. If all is well..
$4000 is NOT too low for a mileage discrepency that he did not tell you before hand. He can claim he didn't know, he might not have. But it is leverage for the price. He now knows you know, and is feeling defensive. Can work for you or against you. He might want to get rid of the car due to the discrepency , and will take a low ball number,.. or he might want to get your out of his business and take another person who will pay the higher price.
I'd offer 4grand cash on the spot. See if he takes it. For some reason cash has buying power.
When you haggle,.. do as I suggested earlier, except you have a base price point to come down on.
$4700 is absolutely not too much to pay, imo.
If it checks out as mechanically sound. The car is worth it.
Now PD is right, if the car gets listed on the Title as innaccurate odometer reading, then the resell goes way down. (Use this fact as a way to get a good deal).
Depending on what you consider bad or good -- You can simply fill out the title with the mileage of 155k and send it in. The car won't be listed as innacurate. Though it all depends on your sentiments on if this is 'right' or 'wrong'.
I would personally fill it out with the 155k, and not list innacurate mileage if the odometer is working as of now.
When I sold it, I would let the potential buyer know that there was once a discrepency with the odometer but it has since been fixed, and the mileage is accurate.
But thats me,.. I don't think its morally wrong with such an indifference, compared to the fact of how people will view the car on resell with an 'inaccurate' flag on it. Sort of how mine is now 'Exempt' due to state law,.. this actually might help me with such mileage on my vehicle,.. but it doesn't look good to parties.
Also with this kind of relatively low figure of buying a car,.. I don't think much about resell. I don't plan on selling this car for a long time,.. and when/if I do it won't be for that much. I'd expect about 2k out of it when I resell, all depending on mechanical condition.
Not like you bought it new for 70grand and are contemplating resell.
Think about it,.. average price for that car new was 50ish grand. Now look at what you are buying it for. I think it is an excellent deal any way you look at it.

A friend of mine at lexus said you can sometimes call the local lexus dealer and give him the vin number and if the lexus has been serviced by any lexus dealer it will show up and give you some kind of an idea how many miles are on the car and what services were done over the life time of the car.

I did call the dealer, and the guy said it was serviced in 04 with 117k miles. After that I was so pissed I didn't even pay attention to the rest of the maintenance that was done.
And I finally got the carfax. 8 months after the reported 117k miles, the car was registered with 51,000!!! That means the car currently has bout 200,000 miles. No way i'd pay more than 2,500.
