yes it sucks to get to, but in the grand scheme of working on cars, it's not a bad job to do. try a late model audi 2.7T.... haha anything on those engines is the most frustrating, time wasting, money costing job! that's the reason i quit working on audi's and went to lexus.

Brought this thread back from the dead. Looks like if you keep your LS long enough you will live the starter nightmare twice. It appears my starter (replaced in 2000) is now in need of replacing again!

Intermittent clicks then it turns over. Followed by weeks of no clicks.

I can't believe the Denso only lasted just 9 years (ha ha). I guess that is pretty good since I put over 200,000 miles and 9 years on the reman Denso. Now I will be out $900 since I won't change it myself

I think it has more to do with battery voltage being maintained at 14vdc constantly keeping the battery fresh and the solenoid not being effected by carbon tracking from low voltage.
Keep a good battery and make sure you replace the battery grounds and terminals every 6 years or so and be like me with 350 on the clock with the original starter in my 98 .

Thanks for the tip - I changed battery ground and terminal only once since 96 - I will do that as it is a cheap insurance policy to avoid the starter swap.
