So what are the choices? 1-Rebuild generic,2-rebuilt denso or 3-china new? Mighty tough call.

I would toss out 1 on any car

easy car 2 or 3

Lexus- toss up 2 or 3,i might do 2 because of Denso's reputation.Very tough call.

What are you thinking now LS400?

I bought my starter new three years ago when I replaced it. It still works perfectly. Amazing how much faster a brand new starter rotates versus a 30 year old(220k mile) oem starter. I looked around for an old link I might have used, but couldn't find it. I figure it must have been from amazon as that is where I normally buy my parts.

Yep, I also visited Amayama which is the only one I would trust for a "new" oem starter but not for $1500, heck I'll just take my chances. I'm going with an Oreilly Denso reman, they even provided me with a printout of 35 different tests that were performed on every component of the starter and even graphs to show the performance results. I'll keep you guys posted, if it fails hopefully it gets me thru the winter. As long as it meets the oem specs and the printout clearly shows it, I'm going to run with it. Thanks much, but I believe if you want the genuine "new" oem starter, Amayama is the only place to get it. Everything else is just a reman or maybe a China "new", but that's not the oem imo. Time to get back to work, it is currently -20 windchill in Wis. going down to -40 windchill, wish me luck

My jeep is a 1967 V6 with +/- 100K on it.Alternator is still original and bet starter was also.It stopped firing, figured would replace. After the rebulit fiasco's got a new china...NOTHING!! Turned out to be the ignition switch wiring. After I replaced ignition switch. But thats all OK,now I have an all new starting system on my 1967,works for me and old jeep parts are cheap, simple to replace and very available!

Anyhow, got it in,put in a big fat highest power Interstate (IIRC) flooded acid battery I could fit,got a solar panel to keep it 100% charged and now it can sit a month or more and I go out and hit the key and.....MAN ALIVE, full blast 12.8 volts!! With 3 trillion amps or something (estimated).

Like you say,it spins that starter waaay better than the old one.Which I cleaned up and kept because Im that kind of guy.

Hey Spud, the seller responded to my email and just like I thought he confirmed it was a Denso Reman. It just proves you have to do your homework before buying anything online, I suppose this guy isn't going to change his listing claiming it's "new", what a croc.

This one doesn't look bad to me, it definitely looks new and Remy is a reputable brand, they used to be part of Delco-Remy which is highly reputable. If I had it to do over again I might have taken a chance with this one. However its only has a 90 day warranty, my Oreilly Denso Reman has a lifetime "limited" warranty and I plan to hold them to it. I'll keep you posted as I'm right in the middle of the installation, I'm going to test the daylights out of my original one first before I install the Reman. Cheers, but its still veeeery cold here

I have enjoyed your post, read them all.. I am in Dallas area, LOTS of salvage here.. I would try to get a low mileage starter and replace the contacts (from Lexus).. and go that way

Possibly spuds, but I wouldn't want to a take a chance on replacing just the contacts with 320k miles on my original, too many other parts could or would fail with that kind of mileage, imo. I'm seeing a lot of resistance to remans even if its a Denso reman, it makes a lot of sense to me to have all new parts inside of a reman than to continue with the original at 320k miles. I may keep my original and have it specked up as a spare, there're only giving me $22 bucks for the core, I'll hold on to it for that price. Warming up to 19 degrees tomorrow, wahooo!

Any ideas on what I should do about cleaning the carbon out of the intake? I'm tempted to just spray some Sea Foam in there to soften it up and just blow it out of there on startup.
