Sonyman,
I believe the mpg formula was derived empirically.

No scientist, engineer, or physisict would believe that any empirically derived formula can describe what happens in real life.

a lighter foot and driving without crap in the trunk will do much more in real word savings. I would much rather have my full size spare, than an undetectable performance, mileage boost.

The stock wheel I use as my spare weighs in at 48#'s. My 18's with the new rubber comes in at 50#'s. If you are doing timed runs, yeah, the 50#'s may make a difference but overall to get caught without a spare is not worth it.

Seriously, if you need the performance so often that your better off removing your spare, then you should keep it in there for when that spike strip blows out one of your tires...

0-60 time of 6.76 seconds with spare
0-60 time of 6.68 seconds without the spare.

I still don't buy the 0.477 mpg improvement though. There are too many variables to take into account for some simple formula.
those 0-60 times are too high! I get better numbers WITH my spare

Removing the spare tire has been the best decision I've ever made. It's dramatically increased my size and stamina. My bank account is flush with cash and now I can fit four Baltic hookers in my trunk instead of three. All because of removing the spare tire.

I don't know why you are so concerned about mpg if you drive a lexus. If your so desperate to get better mpg that you will risk driving without your spare tire over saving pennies for gas, then just get a car with better mpg.

Default Could not get the wheel off

I tried to take the wheel off and did not succeed while using the standard socket wrench supplied with the car.

The nuts or on so tight I had to bounce on the wrench. This worked until the security keyed lug and the wrench kept slipping off when I stood on it and bounced.

So if you have security keyed lugs and just the standard wrench, give it a go before feeling comfortable about it.

I think a cross bar wrench would be handy here.

Exactly! The idiot probably used an impact wrench to tighten them.

It's interesting to see that the LS guys get rid of their spares at a 1:8.5 ratio (i.e. 4 people drive without spares and 34 keep their spares).

While the SC guys get rid of their spare tires at a 1:1.9 ratio (i.e. 36 people drive without spares and 67 keep their spares).

I guess it is obvious that the SC guys care more about performance and the LS guys care more about safety and convenience.

theres also the fact that the SC can be easily made into a performance car, and therefore will be more apt to getting stripped out for weight reduction, than the LS.

i can't believe someone would bring up the idea of removing or leaving a spare. seriously, in real world conditions it wouldn't matter whether your spare tire is in the back because there are other bigger **** that you would have to worry about. i think this thread is a joke. and about SC crew not having spares in the trunk.. a lot of them do that because most of them hit the track with it. without a spare in an ls, you're looking at .477 mpg improvement which is literally a drive around the block
