They tax the hell out fuel up here! Prices at the pump in Quebec are at about the equivalent of of 5.45$ a gallon for the premuim stuff(91 oct or 94 at $5.53
I've started to cycle to work- round trip is about 6 miles. Lost a few pounds and saved a some $$.! I've resigned my self to using by beloved 95 LS 400 for long haul trips only. City driving is no longer an option except for special occassions.
Qustion. At what point is the price of gas going to force you to drive LS way less or not at all? Just curious because I've hit my ceiling for gas expenditures.

Couple options.. Keep cycling to work. Get a smaller 150cc scooter they get 85+ MPG, or get a small 4 cyl beater car to take to work. Of course there are cost to all these.. with tags, insurance etc. I searched yesterday on Craigslist and found many decent cars in the $1500 range. I have been tossing the idea around bout selling the LS.. But I would not save enough to be worth the loss of a car I really enjoy... So I am trying to ride my motorcycle more often.
Really though driving 12 miles a day to work is not that far.. so your rate of return buying an addition fuel efficient car to work is gonna be lower.
Believe me I feel your pain.. I drive a Class B box truck and pay for my own fuel... running about $2300 a month now for fuel driving 1100 miles a week.. plus the $1600 lease payment.
Just write all the number down and make sure you are not spending more $$ than you will likely save... Or even if it is close... it is likely not worth the hassle.

I'm waiting for another 25% (now less) hike in premium to set at $5/gallon before I take my wheels off. I get 27 mpg highway cruising at 65 mph with my wheels, but local is pretty rough. End of the day I average 20.5 mpg.
Before this my highway was 30 mpg, end of the day average was 24 mpg.
It's pretty important to keep your car empty, extra weight (golf clubs, water bottles, red meat, cats, subs, subway sandwiches, rock band drums, etc) should be eliminated if possible.

I agree though, my 20's are heavy, and they are gonna come off if these prices get much more out of hand.

i drive quite a bit, and the price of fuel hasn't really affected me, but psychologically, its all i can think of. if that makes sense.
I hate spending so much. when i first started driving, i drove a 94 altima in 2004. gas was 1.60 a gallon in GA. 17 bucks filled it up... sigh... twice a month(28 mpg). Now i spend $77 to fill up my ls400... 4 times a month. (22mpg)
I know we shouldnt complain, (ls400's are fuel misers compared to most comparable cars of the era) but its still hard to come to terms.
My dad has this old 89 escort pony 4sp manual i might start drivin. but... no ac, no power steering, now power anything, no tach, no temp gauge, 1 door mirror(came like that).
but..... it gets 35-45 mpg depending on how easy i'm on it.. Its been sitting in covered in our carport for 4 years undriven. I'm gonna spend some monies tuning it up and prepping it for duty. I havent driven the car in a long time, so i don't know if i'll be able to cope with 90 hp instead of 250. Its defiantly going from one end of the automotive spectrum to the other. who knows though, it might be a fun little urban runabout. or a deathbox, we'll see.
its a clean little bugger, so its not necessarily embarrassing, but I'm definitely NOT gonna drive it to school. my classmates have x3's, g35s, is250's, even an F'ing Range Rover Sport supercharged, new tahoes and escalades too!. My Lex barely keeps up appearances. Its hard not care what others think, when they all have tight cars. don't judge me.

When gas hits $5 a gallon, I wont give up the car for it. Its not worth trading in the car as I would trade up and spend more than what I would to drive my ride. Im making this car last through college.
I think by about $7.00 a gallon I will start to be extremely concerned, but its not like Im not concerned already. I hate filling up at $80 just like the rest of you, but I can make it last about 2 weeks if I dont take any trips outside the city. To go home though and come back its about 3/4s of a tank on the highway....thats roughly about 320 miles round trip.

Don't just think about saving money; the LS could save your life. I know someone just walked away from a head on collision so I don't mind spending few bucks driving the LS; anyway, I drive only about 3,000 miles per year. So even $20.00 per gallon is fine with me.

Difference between $4 a gallon and $5 a gallon on a 20 gallon tank is $20 a tank. Is extra $20 really gonna break your bank?? IN that case, skip one martini, or another glass of wine at dinner or at the bar. Or make lunch at home and take it with you to work.
I know it hurts, but thinking about it is not gonna help in any way. Just combine all the chores into one trip.
Biking rules by the way, great way to stay fit and save money on those 5 mile trips.
The real problem with high gas price is that food prices at the supermarket will go up as well, so everything gets effected, not just Sunday cruises.

And i agree with lexie too .. the Lexus would save your life .. the CRX would ensure you're dead! Is $20 for your life too much to pay? Lexus for life!
