you might check the shield that surrounds the rotor...after I did my ball joints I had a similiar noise and that's what it was. I just bent it back into position.

You do not need to remove the calipers at all. What you need to do is remove the (2) lower balljoint bolts first. Once you're done doing that, you can lift the whole assembly off; therefore, exposing the nut for the tie rod.

As for the dust shield bending, attach the tie rod first and then tighten the two bolts for the balljoints. That way the steering rack will lock up when it's turned all the way. You'll be able to tighten the bolts without bending the shield.

I dont know about the LS specifically, but if you have the ABS sensor wire attached to the shock body via 10mm bolt, remove that before you do anything, otherwise you might pull on the wire and rip it.
This hint works great. I didn't have any problem with any brake dust shield on my '97 using this method. This method also worked for changing my LCA.

I saw this hint and would have done it, but I was replacing my rotors as well. Removing (or loosening) the 2 lower ball joint bolts first is a good idea, whether you remove the calipers or not.

Is an alignment required after replacing lower ball joints? After upper control arms?

Great post! I am inspired to change my (Lydon's) LBJ's. Where can I order and how much should I expect to pay for some quality OEM joints?

yes you'll need an alignment. good idea to do multiple suspension components at once in order to save by only having to do ONE alignment.

Doing all the suspension parts at once is for suckers. I just get a 1 year alignment program.

Default Somethings going wrong ,at wits end !!!

All was going fine changing out the LBJ ,stuck the new one over the tie rod end ,was screwing the caster nut down ,and it just keeps going .It goes way past the hole where the pin is supposed to go .It is a genuine Toyota part that I bought ,compared it with the old one ,and they are identicle !!Why would it just keep pressing down on the ball joint .Is the nut not supposed to bottom out ?
Thanks

Are you talking about the 17mm nut or the 19mm?

Sounds like he's talking about the one that goes on the tie rod end "stud". IIRC, a 17mm.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but does anyone know the part # for the lower ball joint for a 99?
And are the aftermarket lower ball joints any good that I'm finding on ebay?

having seen the damage a failed LBJ can cause and the added stress on it from a lowered car, do you really wanna take the chance with an aftermarket (usually lower quality) part? personally until a rebuildable LBJ for the 2LS comes out i'll stick to OEM.

95-00 front lbj part no.s are 4333059045 for pass. side and 4334059045 for driver's side.
