How to make my subs sound louder?
Just wondering... apparently Toyota engineered the car a bit too well.
I have a pretty decent sub setup right now, pushing 750-ish watts RMS.
Anyways, as it sits, it's too damn quiet. I realize that there is a gas tank, a piece of steel and a large back seat in between the trunk and cabin, but it's been pissing me off.
What have you guys done? The sub hits damn hard in most other cars, but definitely not in the LS. Also, I noticed that the "bass sound" stays contained in the trunk, and everything else rattles like a ****, which is quite annoying too. I have ran other setups in cars without Dynamat and have had less rattle and more sound, not the other way around.

this is something that i know someone else did. he had 2 12W6V2 in a ported box. they ran a pipe from the port into the rear deck where the old sub use to be. thats the only thing i can think of. i had the same 2 12W6V2 but it was stupid loud lol. so i went down to 2 12W3V2 sealed which is enough bass.
the rattle is from the port on the sides of you car in the trunk. that helps to release the cabin pressure. if you bump one day walk outside and look on your side rear bumper. you can see it rattle.

Take out the stock sub and put the cover back over the hole, thatll let more bass travel into the cabin. I had to do that when I put in my 15" Solobaric L7. It actually helped a LOT. You can totally feel all the air traveling through that hole when youre bumping. I also Dynamatted the whole trunk and trunk lid. It stopped the rattling for a while... but I guess other things started rattling now The trunk flex is awesome though
Im getting tired of the sloppy bass though... I might sell my sub and get 2 12's

Hmmm very interesting.
Is there a proper way to port it into the cabin?
Can I just use say like pcv pipe. drill a hole in the sub box and plumb that upto where the old sub lives.
Or will this mess up the tuning of the sub and sound even worse?
Im only a newby when it comes to designing sub boxes.
Cheers for any advice.

Is there a proper way to run a tube from a sub box into the cabin?
I assume doing so would effect the tuning of the sub.
It is as simple as drilling a hole in the box and plumbing tube upto where the factory sub is (after i remove it)?

There is a proper way to measure the tube's, but i've never been good with that so I dont know If the dimensions of the tubes/ports aren't to spec, you could very well make it sound worse, so no, it's not as easy as just cutting a hold in the box I wish it were though... I'm sure you can find out how to measure the dimensions if you search around on google, but from what I remember, it's pretty complicated...

This might help a bit http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp
The forums on that page help a lot too.
If not, just google "subwoofer port tuning" or something along those lines.

I guess I will take out the stock sub and see if it helps, I don't know how much of a difference it will make.
I also noticed that the sub cover rattles against the glass, like a LOT. I can't hear any of the external vibrations in the cabin, but all I hear is the ratting of the brake light and sub cover.

yea that's the major drawback to an LS imo. i removed the stock sub, sealed teh cover to the glass with some double sided tape, and cut holes on either side of hte shelf and covered them with speaker grills. it helps but still not like a regular car without a gas tank in the way.
big subs and a lot of power is the only way to really get it to hit. even then, your buddy with a single 12 and 800w will blow you away if he has a normal car or hatchback.

Man, I put two kicker solo-baric l5 12's in ported poxes runnin at 1200 RMS and 2400 top in the back of a '97 ls400 without an upgraded alternator, and after 30 mins, the bass was terrible sounding, but it didn't really get low, because of toyota sealing the trunk too well. I have the stock sub taken out also, but it just doesn't compare to ONE solobaric in the back of my moms ls460L. When i put the cheapest subwoofer in the crappiest box ever, it hits so hard and low in the ls460L. The ls460L just has an amazing cabin for bass and other frequencies. Its incredible.
