Be aware that if your engine has not been worked on much, you may find many of the plastic parts to be brittle, and will break easily as you remove them. So try to minimize that.

I've got a question for you or anyone else on that green wire that appears above the upper radiator hose. It is wrapped in a coil around the #6 spark plug wire. That wire is used for checking engine ignition timing since #6 fires when #1 is at TDC (the #1 wire could be used, but #6 is front and center there in the wire bridge, so it is more convenient).

But as far as I know, that green coil of wire is not standard. Right? And I'll guess it is some after market thing installed for easier access for timing, or for a tachometer. Any info? Thanks.

EDIT - and the reason I'm interested is that for old LS400s like this, before OBDII, and with notoriously flaky (or just broken) tachometers, there may be no easy way to measure true engine RPM accuately other than by counting spark frequency.

Thanks RA40. Sorry for not saying I have a 1997. It looks like I can't remove my Ignition Coil because the screws keeping the top part on are very brittle and just strip when I try to remove them. I don't know if I can do it without taking the ignition coil off, it looks maybe possible but way more difficult. Also I have no idea how to unhook the ECT Sensor. I worry I will break the wires. The rounded little connection pins simply pull out the top?

I managed to do it. I figured out that the 2 prong clip has a big cap. I don't think I had to right tools for the job. Some type of long socket to get over the plastic part would be nice. I could see how for an more experience mechanic this could be an easy job, but off and on it took me like 7 hours to get it done. It was raining but still. I want to say that the exhaust smells less rich right away. I also think my engine sounds a little different. I hope I didn't mess it up but I will post in my "build thread" and see what the community thinks. Thanks again RA.

2 questions.I have a black one,is that something different?I dont see the green one, maybe I already did this...Next,how the heck does that connector come off,I can move it a little up and down but do I squeeze it somewhere to unhook it?I saw some connectors that have silicone holding them on,dont want to destroy anything.

Part number 89422-30030 PU18
Is this where I push in with like a screwdriver to release it?

Is this siliconed on connector the ECT ? Looks like mine has already been pre-broken for me,clean off the silicone and just pull it off?Does anybody know if Lexus sells a new wire connector and can it be replaced, part number?

Unless wires are damaged, then splicing wires not necessary.

I went to the utube and looked up replacing car connectors to see how removing wires was done.If that causes problems you can just use a dremel or just crack apart the old connector to get the wires/pins removed.

The connector I bought even comes with 3 new pins and was 8.95 delivered.I got mine from KVI there are a billion sources.VERY cool these Toyota connector housings are so available because if you have to remove them many will be completely brittle and just fall apart when you touch them.

Utubers love this tool around 15 dollars for wire removal.

Great, thx... I will investigate the next. I just sent out my ECU, gauge cluster, and climate control unit for repairs. As soon as those are back and installed I will calculate my mileage and slowly and deliberately tackle each sensor and potential problem at a time. That temp sensor sounds like a good place to investigator. I will keep you posted.
