Default 94 LS400 139k Rack and Pinion Question

I posted this under the "bible" section at first but that may not be the place for it so I am reposting here. I hope this is ok. I read around before doing this but do need your help.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi all,
I read through the PS bible and searched the forums as well. I was hoping someone could help me out a bit. I don't have the white smoke at start up, am not having any PS issues that I notice through steering. But, I took my LS in to have the sub frame bolts torqued and the mechanic said I needed a new rack and pinon steering and showed me leaks and evidence of leeks on both sides. He said you don't see spots in the driveway because it blows back while driving.
Does this sound like the rack and pinion needs to be replaced? I am no mechanic at all. My 94 has 139k miles and it has not been replaced yet.
Thank you for your help.
Any recommendations would be appreciated knowing that you can't actually diagnose it without seeing it.
It needs to be replaced. I had my rack and pionion replaced at 128k. I noticed my power steering fluid level was low, so I had the mechanic check it out and surely enough there was a leak in the rack and pinion assembly.
check for low fluid chances are u will need to replace ur hoses as well as the pump...the thing is if u replace one of the 3 and the others go out at a later date u will have an adverse effect on the rack and pinion which could result in lowering the expected life of the rack which is by far the most expensive part to buy and replace
Thanks to everyone for taking time to answer. The cheapest i can get it done for is about 1100 bucks, any thoughts on the price?
Thank you!
