Hi

Guys i have 98LS with the VVTI engine

First question has anyone changed the ECT sensor - If yes could they post up a walkthrough

Secondly part of the reason why im doing the above is becuase i Struggle to get over 12MPG. It has been serviced and the thermostat changed. I do mostly city driving but i think i should still be getting around the 20 MPG figure

If anybody has any suggestions i would be very grateful

Just did this on my LS, and i'm still getting 17 city which is what i got before i changed it out. What are you guys getting in the city? I dont have a lead foot, and I drive the speed limit. Its a 99 btw
Although i do feel that its a bit faster, maybe its in my head. But was hoping for a more dramatic increase in mpg

Hi vincent did you do this on an 99LS or GS? - if it was LS could you let me know whats involved - i need to do it aswell and most of this threadcovers the earlier LS models

I have a 96 and it runs perfectly but my best mileage on a tank of gas was 325 miles. I see many have had a noticeable difference but what I want to know is did any of you have any driveability issues like running rough, blowing black smoke out of the tailpipe or low power? Was your vehicle idling and running fine? Hate to change the sensor for nothing. Also I have access to a scan tool so I can read what the ECT is at.

if its the one i think you mean, it is the sensor for the gauge on the dash.

Agree with William. The sensor directly behind the ECT, black plug single wire, is the temp sensor for the gauge.

I just did this R&R. Ordered the part from rockauto.com and it wouldnt fit all the way into my deep socket, it torqued the plastic connector on the sensor. it has the lips that guide the connector on, these wont allow it to fit. I got the right part without the lips from O'Reilly for about $12 cheaper.

I looked up the coolant temp sensor for a 99 LS at autozone.com and came up with a different part number (SU4320). This sensor is almost $30 more than the one mentioned here on this thread (SU4007). JW if there is any difference between the two (besides color)? Should the output from the sensors all be the same anyways (for the 1uz-fe)?

I am having a problem with this swap, I replaced the sensor with the $30 part from Oreillys, reset the ECU by disconnecting the neg batt cable, and now it is getting worse gas mileage. Could the non lexus part not be compatible with the ECU? is there something i am missing?

sounds like the same one i got. I think i have other issues though that are effecting my mileage but i did notice an over night decrease after swapping it.

my 93 ls400 has 160k miles and the sensor was replaced today. Based on the results of those on the forum it sounded like this was the key to restore lost MPGs and throttle responsiveness. For $25 after tax from autozone and 10 minutes worth of installation (already had the spark plug/timing belt covers removed for some other recent work) I can feel the car is much smoother at light acceleration and more responsive. It seems like the tranmission is much quicker to drop down a gear when I press on the pedal too. In the past few years I suppose there has been an indication from the smell of the exhaust that the car was running rich so I didn't hesitate to swap out this sensor after reading about the good results people were having. Without having read the forums I would not have figured a coolant temp sensor would make much difference on a fully warmed up car. I guess the sensor gets out of spec over time and indicates the engine was cooler than it really was. The computer gives more fuel to a cooler engine. I would have tested my old sensor to see how far out of spec it was, but it broke apart upon removal.
