How strong is Toyota's 1UZ for turbo?
So I been thinking that I am almost done with the exterior of my car and the interior wont take much so I wanna start piecing together some sort of engine build. At first I was leaning to wards a 2jzgtte swap since the 2jz swap is pretty much proven to handle boost and make over 600+hp easily w/o internal mods and still holding up well with reliabilty and all plus the "wow" factor of a 2jz in an LS(which I havent seen myself but Im sure its been done, have seen a 430 in japan on youtube) is awesome. Now Im wondering if I should just piece together a turbo kit for my LS and see what I can make of the 1uz. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with FI on an LS400, if so what kind of set up, numbers, and reliable was it? Feel free to throw any other ideas out there. Forced Induction is a MUST though, maybe even just a supercharger? Aiming for 600-700 hp here.

I know that alot of the Supra guys are starting to finally crack open the full potentials of the 1UZ engines. From all of the research I have looked into, the 1UZ is a varitable tank of an engine and is VERY strong. I know that there are some You tube vids of people running turbo setups on the 1UZ. The biggest problem with this engine is that there is little/no market in place for upgrade parts and this motor is VERY expensive to mod. Most vendors just did not find it cost effective to do anything with it. Most of the setup will have to be hand fabricated, tested and fitted.

Yea I I know about the little support the one uz gets as far as aftermarket parts which is why I really wanna lean towards keeping the internals stock. Im not looking to make a fully built uz or anything just something that can push over 600 hp while still maintianing reliabilty. I have heard of supras making 800+hp with no internal engine mods, except cams I beleive, and still running perfect even after 100k miles, it was that that really got me interested in a 2jz swap. I wouldnt mind doing minor things like head gasket and things of that nature but rather not spend alot of money on buying other things like pistons, rods, resleeving etc. I figured if Im gonna spend alot of money I minus whale go for the 2jz swap

yeah very expesnive. i'm a turbo fan, turbos' on anything make it that much cooler but turbo'ing my LS was just ridiculous and i do all my own work, tuning, etc since i'm a mechanic anyway. i think a rear mount turbo would be the best bet though, like the GM LSx cars use. it eliminates teh packaging issues with our tight engine bays.
i think there's a current thread about STS (squires turbo systems) in CL right now. they're the ones who piioneered teh rear mount turbo systems.

I was just reading an magazine article about a holden torana (1970's aussie car, weighs about 1100kg) with a twin turbo 1uz with 650rwkw still running standard internals

6 bolt main FTW. Already a good platform to boost..it just takes money. The 1uz-fe (pre-vvti) is pretty damn overengineered. You wont find too many aluminum block engines at the time with 6 bolt mains, big connnecting rods, etc. however rebuilding the block with aftermarket parts is EXPENSIVE. you just have a lot more of everything vs the 2jz-gte. 32v vs 24v. 8 pistons/rods vs. 6 pistons/rods. More studs, etc. But once it's said and done, it's a beast!
