Default Crank bolt - did I #@&* up?

1999 LS400 - interference engine - while attempting to loosen crank bolt, moved crank pulley in CCW direction. I know you can turn it CW, but I don't think it is supposed to go CCW. How bad did I screw up, and what do I do to fix?

If the timing belt was still on you'll be fine.

Timing belt is still on. So I'm ok?? This is the most nerve-wracking part of this, is not screwing up the removal and install of belt.

Thank you!! I was sweating bullets!

So, without any special tools, which is the best/easiest method of loosening the crank pulley nut?

* Lock pulley with big screwdriver or similar, use socket with breaker bar to muscle free

* Use two people, with one holding whatever concoction I can fashion to hold pulley steady while the other cranks on socket with breaker bar

* If I recall reading correctly, put socket w/ breaker bar on nut, against ground on driver side, bump starter to loosen (anything else to this one? anything to be careful of?)

The best way is to put a breaker bar on the bolt and have someone crank the starter for a fraction of a second. Make sure you put like a 4 foot extension on the breaker bar, that bolt is torqued at 200lb/ft, so you must grab a good hold of the breaked bar.

The only way to properly tight it would be with an impact gun. When I replaced the TB on my car, I removed the bolt with the starter method, then assembled everything together and tightened that bolt as best as i could, made sure none of the pulleys driven by the TB or drive belt were sticky, and drove carefully to a friends house who has an impact gun, and got it properly tightened.

Or reverse the contact on the starter motor so it spins backwards.

I have used the starter alot of times. it is very ease "pipe on breaker bar" . But the way I look at it is U have to tighten it buy holding the flywheel might as well take it off that way. starter still works and crank bearings have no flat spot on them. it was a honda TSB that a read and got me to stop using the starter. do what u want. torque wrenches make it nice for the next guy toooooooooooooooooooooo

Haven't been on in a while. Just thought I would add a new option for loosening/tightening the crank pulley nut......ESPECIALLY if you are replacing the serpentine belt. I will throw in the caveat that in my case, the nut spun right off using an impact wrench, but just in case you don't have access to one.........

This is a 2 man job. Remove serpentine belt (not sure I would try this method if I was keeping that belt on or not). Wrap old belt around crank pulley. Snug belt to pulley with locking pliers. Take loose end, wrap around something firm on frame/axle, etc. and pull back toward pulley from underneath. Provides enough tension to torque nut to spec.
