I am taking my wife's 98 LS400 to our regular independent shop for oil/filter change and tire rotation and regular checks today. The car has 98,500 mi and is overdue for the 90K service. I printed out the list of stuff that should be changed while in there from AZMike's thread here:

I plan to give them the list and ask for an estimate (parts and labor) to do this work. I am looking for input on what those costs should be. I also would like to know if I should insist on only OEM parts, or if non-OEM is okay for some or all. AZMike, if you're reading this, where did you buy parts and what did they cost? Anyone know what the Lexus or Toyota dealers would charge for this? Anyone have experience with Lexus or Toyota dealerships in Tucson?

Well OK, picked up the car and estimate last evening. It's a little over $1700 for parts and labor. Breaks down like this:
I didn't get a chance to talk to the person who does estimates because almost everyone was gone when I got back down there. So I don't know for sure it those are all Lexus parts on not, but I assume they are because this shop almost always uses OEM.

So, what do you guys think? I am going to call the closer Lexus dealership next week and talk to a service writer for the same extimate. I am thinking of calling a Toyota dealer also and ask them. Thanks.

I just had my '96 LS400's timing belt and water pump replaced in Garland, TX--he charged $480 for oem Lexus parts. Check out www.northdallasimports.com --heck of a deal and really did great work. If you're in the area--worth a try!

I bought my parts this time from mylexparts.com, because they were running a 10% off sale. Others to consider are irontoad.com, sewellpartsonline.com, newlexusparts.com, and lexuspartsonline.com.

Here is a breakdown of what I paid after the 10% off:
timing belt $37.67
left idler pulley $59.67
right idler pulley $59.45
TB tensioner $37.76
thermostat $12.87
water pump $94.34
serpentine belt $35.51
fuel filter $24.14
thermostat gasket $3.22
gas cap gasket $10.79'
crank seal $7.48
wiper inserts $2.78 and $4.61

Lexus will charge something like 5-6 hours for the job, at whatever the prevailing rate is (I think around $125/hr around here). In Phoenix, you can find independent Lexus mechanics who charge less for labor.

In agreement with others, I would use lexus OEM parts only.

Wow! Looks like my parts quote is about 2.5-3X for each component vers what you paid. I think this shop must not want my business. I'm gonna try to get a quote from Lexus this week. I can't be without this car for more than a day or so, otherwise I might have a go at it myself. I would probably end up with it all apart for days and days while I screwed around... Good luck Mike. I'm gonna keep an eye on your progress in here.

To be fair, most dealers stick it to you in person. Typically, the good deals are via lexus dealers who do internet sales on the side. If you want to hire someone to do the work, find the parts you need online, then give them the option of matching the price or you bringing your own parts in.

Here in UAE middle east , i would buy new car with this cost.
i just changed my LS400 2000 model timing belt which cost me 189 $ parts from dealer + 67$ for labor work (non dealer machanic, but expert).

I bet you get a killer deal on gasoline in that part of the world too.
