1998 power steering pump rebuild
While changing the water pump/TB, I did notice that the PSP was leaking. I decided the best way to replace this is to get a junked (but unbroken) pump, rebuild it and then swap it out with the one I have now.
Then I can rebuild it, put it on the shelf and swap them back out in another 100,000.
However, I spoke to my Lex/Toy mech (an ex-lex mech who has an indy shop now and does the work I don't want to do) this morning. He said he has had very bad luck with both rebuilding the PSP and with purchasing rebuilt PSP on these (98-00) cars. He said sometimes they begin to leak as soon as you build the pressure up on them. He said he now just bites the bullet and buys the new ones from Lexus.
So, the question is, "Has anyone had any luck (+50,000) either with rebuilt PSPs for these years?"
TIA,

I also know that a lot of dealerships sell and install rebuild PSPs. However, that doesn't mean that they are worth the money. For example, O'Reilly has what looks to be a reasonable pump for about $160 with their life time warranty. But, if I have to replace it every 50,000 I might be better off just buying the new one - especially if it kills the alternator.
Since I plan on keeping my LS400 for another 100,000, I'd like to put a PSP in that has a good chance of lasting another 100,000.
So, that's the question. Does anyone have enough experience (>50,000 miles on a rebuilt) to suggest that a properly rebuilt PSP has a good chance of lastly 100,000?
Thx.
