I getting pretty sold on the LS, being a girl, it seemed the ES "fit" me more as far as size and look and all the running around I do. My BF says that I should go with the v-8 because of the power and then proceeds to tell me if I did go for a v-8 then I should get the Lincoln LS...YUCK. Not my style. I never thought I would even consider the v-8 but the research shows these will go forever! Like I said before, I have only had Toyota / Honda / Acura. My favorite to date was my 92 Acura Legend. If I'm going to buy a used car, its got to last me!
As far as maintenance, what other should I be doing periodically other than the synthetic oil changes every 3 months and premium gas?

if you liked the legend you will like the LS400 over the ES.
premium gas is up to you, i find that the 98-00 are a little less prone to knock with premium.
i'd strongly recommend you spend the extra 1000-1500 and buy a 98-00 LS, the feel and look are completely different and imho superior to the 95-97. i say that coming from a 95 myself.

I have a 96 LS400 and 2005 LS430. I previously had a 98 Camry. The ES is closer to a Camry than the LS400. For me, there is a huge difference between the LS and any other Japanese car. When I got the LS400 I decided I would never buy anything else as my primary car. The LS400 has 146,000 miles and it is still going strong with only scheduled maintenance.
The main difference between the LS400 and LS430 is the bells and whistles.
I mentioned an LS430 that I'd seen in Autitrader to my wife and she said buy the 430 and claimed the 400 for herself. (My drive to work is 3 times as long as hers.)
For 7 grand and mileage under 125k, a 96 LS400 is a GREAT car.

I've been holding out for a 98 and there just aren't any around. I'm thinking about making an offer for the 96 (115K) miles, or should I keep looking?? I'm in the land of Fords and Chevys, so there not as popular as in other areas.
Just to recap, the original price was 8650. He went down to 7500. I asked for 7000 after that and the dealer said no. That was over three weeks ago and it still sits. Should I try again? Apparently it could use new tires soon, so maybe I should try 7300 and new tires?
P.S. I have found several 92 or 94's for between 4000-6000 (found a 92 with only 87K miles!). Some look alittle rougher and I just like the newer ones better. The car will also have to last for the next 5 years of "in town" driving.

Interesting posts!
i was also considering an ES at some point but really want an LS400 now.But here in LA most of them have lots of miles on them and are being sold by dealers.. whom most of the time have no serb=vice records on the car and just simply tell you to call Lexus with the Vin # to get some info on the car ,o course the Lexus Dealer will not give one any info one what has been done to a car!
So for me looking for a 1997.1998 Ls has been very frustrating...
as i m looking for something with around 100- 120 k and can not pay more then $8000 for it...
But I m still hopeful
