Doing a muffler delete
#31
Can someone post pics how to remove the mufflers? Are the bolts easy to take off and did you have to use any lubricants to loosen the bolts? I'm tempted to take it to the shop and let them do it but if i can do it for free then i should right? I just don't know where to begin.

there are two bolts on each side where the pipe from the muffler connects to the pipe from the resonators. 3 out of the 4 bolts came of fairly easy for me. the 4th i had to shave off caz it was stripped.
after that go to the mufflers hangers. there are two bolts holding the the hanger, take those to bolts out and there u go no more mufflers.
all and all id say it took me about 20 min to do all this. very easy and quick job

I'm going to give it a go next weekend when i get home from school. Hopefully i won't mess up anything. I'll spray the bolts down with wd-40 first, let it sit for about 5 mins and then get to working.
The hangers that you are talking about, it is what that is holding the mufflers in place right? and the two bolts on each side of the muffler is what that is connecting the muffler to the rest of the exhaust?

First pic is the center muffler/silencer section from 1995-2000 LS400
Next is view of rear exhaust with car on rack without wheels.
Next is closer look at dual pipes from center to rear muffs
Next is closer and then the actual clamp(s)
Earlier models are very similar except use 2 bolt flanges instead of the 1 bolt band clamp.

Here is the hanger at the back of the car at each muffler. I use locking pliers to grab the outside rubber O ring hanger and pull it off the hook and it can stay on the muffler. From there the other rubber O ring can stay on the car.
On the years with the band clamp 95-00 each outlet from the center silencer section has a rolled edge to make it easier to slide the pipes together. This creates an unneccesary flow obstruction that I used locking pliers/patience/skill to gentle un-do creating a straight flowing part with no lip. The pictures show the stock outlets with 48mm outside and only 40mm inside due to the lip.
After removing each rear muffler (10min on my car) the result is simply nothing after the center silencer section. This is still surprisingly quiet with a sound more like a stock V8 truck exhaust that is silent at cruising speed.

Thanks PD. I'll get some pb blaster and use that instead of the wd-40. this previous week i've been busy with school and i'm not feeling too well this weekend so i might be doing this next weekend instead.

Oh and i have a 94' ls400 by the way.
This is my plan for the exhaust mod. Removing the two rear muffler and see how it sounds. If its still too quiet for me then i'll remove the center muffler. If then its not loud enough, what i'll do is add dual magnaflow mufflers.
With adding the magnaflow mufflers, do yall think its necessary to remove the center muffler?
