99' ls ideas on mods?
Whats a good mod i can do to get some horsepower without using much money . im a highschool student, like maybe around a $100 bucks? i already installed k&n air filter and took out the air intake bar. i also did some maintence with seafoam. plus my car has a lot of rolling. any ideas are appreciated. thanks

like pd said, i always tell young cats on a tight budget just to stay up on maintenance. there's probably some power loss to be recovered there too. save your cash until you need it and take the maint/mod approach. i.e. shock is blown so save up and buy some aftrmarket shocks/springs, bake pads are worn so get some performance pads/braided lines, etc.
just fyi, i bet you actually lost power messing with the intake. that "bar" is designed to get cool air from outside the engine bay. if i'm understanding you correctly you removed it and are now sucking up hot engine bay air. i have seen this proven on several nissans and would be surprised if it wasn't the same case here.

u could do a muffler delete, im not 100% that it will give u much power, if any. i took my mufflers off my 94 Ls which was very easy, only look me about 20 min. i went to meineke and they charged me $120 to bend and weld pipes in place of the mufflers
so if some1 can chime in and conform if a muffler delete will actually add some power, there u have mod thats pritty much in ur budget.

Put the intake stuff back to stock.
This car was engineered well enough that the parts you took off actually were meant to be there for a reason. Meaning, you are now probably making LESS power with those parts removed.
I know this doesn't apply to all cars, but in this case you are better off stock here.
~$100 would buy you squat for this car. Keep it in case a tire blows or some other drama.

yeah just maintanence inside and out goes a long way,if your think of something ridicoulos like silly body kits etc.. i will be straight with you with a ls 400 its just gonna look flat ugly. instead if u like modify cars buy a cheap honda and go crazy. good luck

Search for the Lexkost air intake mod. It's a $2 mod with noticeable auditory gains from the intake system.
Like others said, a muffler delete is cheap as well, and you don't technically have to buy anything.

yeah i figured as much. i took off the bar thinking the more air the intake sucks in the better the performance. but i do like the nice roar without the bar and with it is much quieter. but yeah i think i might do the Lexkost air intake mod. another thing, how much of a diff do spark plugs make?

like everyone's saying, put that duct back in place. Cut off the big intake muffler on the main intake pipe (throttle-AFM) and seal the small hole with a piece of plastic from the muffler and some heat resistant glue (epoxy is great). This will give you the stock intake but with some induction noise.

except that it isnt exactly a "muffler". it's a tuned helmholtz resonator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmholtz_resonance ) which is actually more beneficial to the power curve of the engine than any piece of straight tubing (theoretically)

better off replacing the "accordian" style plastic tube with straight aluminum+silicone connectors if you must mess with the intake.
