Default 178,000 When Removed

I replaced the iming belt at 178,000 when the water pump started to leak. It was serviceable then.

Default timing belt inspection

Chad,

You have it right. Check the belt with every (or every other) oil change and replace it when you notice deterioration. Small checks on the back of the belt are not a cause for concern but having significantly worse checking on your next oil change is.

Replace it when belt wear has you concerned, the water pump fails, or an oil seal starts leaking... whichever comes first.

I also replaced the alternator brushes while mine was apart. They were cheap and it was accessable.

Same thing on the back end when my EGR return pipe started leaking (a common issue around 100k.) I had new contacts put in the starter motor for only $20 extra (since you have to drop the transmission to get at both the EGR pipe and the starter.)

Default EGR Replacement

Not all models require the removal of a tranny to replace an EGR Pipe. My 94 LS had its EGR replaced without this step. It is very tight quarters however & I believe model year specific as to whether it can be done.

Smart idea to do the brushes. I also replaced alternator parts when I did my timing belt service.
