Help! Car will not shift out of Park!!!
OK, first off, the car is a '92 LS400, 138,XXX miles, original
tranny. Tranny fluid flush about 20K miles ago. I know you
have to depress the brake pedal before you can shift out
of park. Now when I depress the brake and try to shift, it
will not go. I now have to use the "shift lock release"
button to get out of park. I am not sure if it is a sensor
or a fuse or something. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Rajah B.

Happened to me once before. I took it to the dealer and they replaced a switch for me (I forgot what kind of switch). Cost me about $100.00. But I had to wait about 2 weeks to get the switch from japan

From the problem description and without looking at the schematics, these are the potential causes of your problems:
1. a switch that detects pressing of brake pedals.
2. bad transmission lever release solenoid.
3. electrical or wiring problems between #1 & #2 (eg. fuses, bad wiring).
Need to do more diagnosis to narrow down to the culprit.
Goodluck!

Re: Help! Car will not shift out of Park!!!
This happened to me. It is most likely in the trunk wiring harness, that courses through the left trunk hinge channel. The loop in that wiring harness was made too tight, and the wires separate with time. The ECU lock circuit is fed throught the light failure sensor which in turn is fed from the taillights and needs signal to operate the ECU lock. Does the combination meter display a tail light signal out? Does the cruise control work?

Hey, just to inform you guys (incase you run across the same
problem) check your fuses. I found that the fuse for the brake
assembly had blown. I also noticed some wires which were
put inside with the fuse, to power something else. Could someone
telll me if they have a green and a red wire coming out of thier
fuse box where fuses should be plugged in. Im curious to know
if someone has rigged something thru my fuse box. thanks

Don't you love it when you can fix something for a few $?
Any wires taping in with the fuse are for aftermarket equipments such as alarm, CD changer, etc... They are not original equipments.

There is no aftermarket installations other
than a car phone by Centel. I do know when
i purchased the vehicle a year and a half
ago, it was from the original owner, who was
25 and he had it sitting on 20" niche rims, with
the eibach lowering springs. I am not sure if
he installed a system though.
