Hello again,
How bad will it sound? That is hard to say but it will definitely sound better than the setup you described that your father is currently using. If you want to power the subwoofer than do the following: Purchase a head unit with amplified outputs (speaker level outputs...........usually around 20 watts for all four channels) and an RCA subwoofer output. Thensimply use a wiring harness adapter to power the speakers off of the head units built in amplifier and use the subwoofer output to feed a seperate mono amplifier (get one with at least 200 watts mono) and run the outputs to your factory subwoofer. Be sure that the amplifier is stable into 2 ohms because I believe that the factory Pioneer speaker is rated at 2 ohms. You can then use the adjust the level of the subwoofer from your head unit. PM me if you want a more detailed explanation.
Good luck!
Luis

Given the last couple of answers:
It's a very good idea to change the factory subwoofer to a newer one, as modern speakers are soo much better. For an easy exchange you should use an 8" open-air, which will be quite easy to exchange with the old one. With a decent modern mono amplifier this will improve base sound quality quite noticeably. Check www.lexls.com in the tutorials/audio section. (Yes I know that you are not going to do it yourself, but the information is good anyhow.)

you guys could just buy a BeatSonic harness if you really wanted to keep the factory speakers AND sub ![Uhh...](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/1387914497.gif)
first gen iirc is SLA-10xxx
early 2nd gen is SLA20xxx (maybe 21/22 cant remember)
expensive, but the dash kits match PERFECTLY and the harness integration is plug and play.
