97 LS400 Antenna Mast Keeps Breaking
I have a 97 LS400 and I have replaced the mast 2 times. It keeps breaking the teeth away from the metal part. After the second time, I removed the motor assembly again and pushed the broken metal part of the mast down the tube that attaches to the motor. When I did this it seems to jam. Something is making it jam up.
Does anyone know if there is a bushing in the tube/shaft that can wear out. I tried to replace each time with aftermarket masts off ebay. Has anyone had this problem? Seems like the inside of the tube has worn down and now the metal part of the mast catches. When this happens the plastic teeth just rip away.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Thankfully, Lexus eliminated power antennas on the LS after 97. The masts require periotic cleaning and lubrication (wd40 and a clean rag), and are suseptible to damage. To ensure proper function when replacing the mast, always remove the motor, dismantle the spool case, inspect the gears and remove any broken cable pieces. Reinstall the motor, turn radio on, wait till motor turns off, then feed in the new mast by turning the radio off. Use an OEM mast only.

What is important is to periotically clean the mast with whatever methood you are comfortable with, as the dirt will shorten the masts life.

Had similar problem with mine. Bought one whole unit (made sure it worked first) from a used parts yard for $50. The replacement time was less than 30 minutes and real easy. Had no problem since then.
