1991 Headlight confusion..
I was at O'Reilly's earlier today to replace a burnt out tail light, and pulled up in a parking spot directly in front of the building, front row. Kind of dark, headlights were shining on the side of the building about ten feet away..noticed my passenger headlight's beam was nowhere to be seen, even though it was on.
Popped the hood, took the assembly out, and this is where problems began..
According to the user manual, you twist the black lock ring counterclockwise to remove the bulb. Well, this bulb had the black lock ring on the BACK (road side) of the bulb, then the black lock ring just hanging in there loosely, with the boot following that..and the boot/bulb was held in place by a larger grey ring that twisted in to place. Effectively the only thing holding the bulb in place was the rubber boot and the grey lock ring that held the boot in place.
Same story on the other side, but there was also a retaining spring/clip. I couldn't figure this out for the life of me.
Eventually I got the bulbs back in to their boots (driver's side was half gone, had to tape in to place).
What I'm curious to know is, am I missing some parts? This is driving me nuts..I can barely see to drive at night. While in there I noticed it looked like there has been prior front end damage..some of the tabs the assembly bolts/screws down in to were bent, and I noticed on the back of the actual headlight, inside the assembly bracket, on the driver side had blue writing marker writing on it, numbers, like you'd see at a pick n pull or salvage yard.
Did someone have a wreck, break the headlights, then replace them with the wrong year and jury-rig the lamps in to place? Halp!

There's a good chance that the culprit bought the headlight assemblies off of a 93-94 and rigged the bulbs. Funny thing is the fog light lamps fit perfectly, retaining spring mechanisms and a rubber boot.
All the screws and mounting points line up fine.
I'll take pictures tomorrow..it's waaaaaay too cold to get out there in the weather right now..
Looking at the back of the assembly, there's a big grey plastic ring that twists counter clockwise to remove which holds the rubber boot in place. Then a rubber boot with the connector end of the socket sticking out of the center of it. Pull that out and the black plastic lock ring that's supposed to go on the outside (I think) of the boot was just floating there on the socket.
Driver's side had a retaining spring, passenger side didn't, but you can see where one used to be.
